hello,

i need some help in finding a solution for a more "special" setup and searching the web the last few weeks didn't helped much.

i'll try to explain as good as i can but feel free to ask if you think i missed something.

So, on a pc with a capture card connected to tv signal SD i need to record the video in a good bitrate/resolution and then be able to select accurately (frame by frame preferably) a piece from the video and encode it in mp4 with variable settings, in the meantime the recording shouldn't be interrupted.
Would be great if all this could be done remotely through an interface of some sort or even by remote desktop connection.

At the moment the setup is looking like:
- pc with capture card records the tv signal in mpeg2 5mbps bitrate using the card's software
- person stops/starts the recording after a sequence from tv that needs to be encoded finishes so the file can be worked on and the recording is still going
- file is added to VideoRedo for cutting the piece needed
- resulting file is encoded with MediaCoder to mp4

So basically i would need the same thing but with a better workflow and more organized so the person who uses it can do it faster and don't need to work with 3 programs and do mistakes while in a rush.

Any solutions (commercial software/hardware) advice is welcome.

Thank you!

I can't answer your question directly, but I can tell you that MediaCoder is a broken piece of junk. If x264-in-mp4 is your goal, just use the already scriptable/batchable x264 CLI encoder directly.

I don't know of any way to do that sort of thing in 1 package, but there are a couple of programs that could make your life easier

AVIDemux (http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/) to do both the cutting and encoding to MP4

TV Scheduler Pro (http://www.bluebit.com.au/) to automate the capture process

Well Inspector, i would if it was me that had to work with it :) but for the people that actually do it it's not really a good idea, even the current setup took some time to get "used to" :|
thx dat720, i'll try to test avidemux and see how it improves the workflow but i would really like some better solution like i describe in the first post :|

Anyone else, pretty pls? :) It's no problem if it's a commercial solution (as long as it's not of ten of thousand $ :P)

Come to think of it are you aware that Virtual Dub can capture video? i'm not sure if it will capture digital but i know for a fact it will do analog, i can't test it as all my tuners are in my Myth TV box, so maybe you should download a copy of VirtualDub and give it a go.

Sorry but as i said i'm looking for a full suite that will do what i need reliably and also not replace those 3 programs with other 3, anyway last time i checked vdub i had some crashes and problems so it's not really an option for me.

Have you tried a recent build of vdub? i've never had anything but good experiences with it.

Hauppauge makes some good capture devices and has an app called 'Wing' that integrates with their recording app to convert to H.264, MPEG-4 and DivX. This may work for you.

I was thinking at something along the lines of:
http://www.digital-rapids.com/Products/IndividualProducts/StreamZ.aspx
..and other all-in-one solutions either free or commercial that provide recording, encoding, delivery in one "box" either software-only or software-hardware.
The thing is that i want to improve the current workflow and make it faster/better.

thanks.
