WMP11 works, VLC, mplayer croak... why?

So I have ripped my screener dvd of Defiance to ISO on my HDD for playback on my xbmc box. This is an uncommon DVD of course, so I don't expect people to have direct experience with it. However, maybe if I describe the problem someone can think of a reason why it might be happening...

I ripped the dvd to ISO using RipIt4Me as a front-end to DVD Decrypter.

If I play the ISO via the xbmc box, or directly on my PC by mounting the ISO with Daemon Tools and playing with something like VLC or mplayer, it will play until exactly 9:00 minutes into the feature, then it quits. Not back to the menu, or start of the disc, it totally stops playing, as if you hit "stop".

However, if I play it on WMP11, it plays through the 9:00 minute mark no problem, and continues on to play the whole movie. Also, if I scan past the 9 minute mark, it continues to play fine on mplayer, VLC, etc.

I currently have no other way to watch movies on my HT than to rip them and then play via xbmc (my dvd player is dead, and the xbmc box dvd drive is dead too.)

Any ideas why this is happening, and why WMP11 can handle it? I'm posting here, because since it happens with both VLC, mplayer, and XBMC, I'm guessing it's a problem with the FFMPEG/libmpeg codec suite(s)... but not sure.

IIRC, WMP11 can handle DRM. Is it possible your ripping process did not completely remove any DRM from the original source?

Maybe you could try re-ripping with AnyDVD trial and see if that makes a difference.

Paramount Pictures. Technically, the discs and the media contained therein are the property of Paramount.

I have no intention of sharing this media with anyone, so rule 6 doesn't apply.

I've re-ripped using DVDFab5, and AnyDVD. All three rip methods result in the same problem.

BTW, I was mistaken about mplayer... it plays it fine. So of the media players I have, mplayer plays it best, WMP11 and MPClassic play it okay, with a small hiccup at 9 minutes (like a bad layer change), whereas XBMC and VLC choke and exit the video completely.

It just dawned on me to try playing the physical disc on my computer. I don't have XBMC installed on the PC, but I do have VLC. The physical disc choked in the same spot, just like the rip version. So it must be an error in the disc itself, one that WMP11, mediaplayerclassic, and mplayer can handle, but VLC and XBMC can not.

Uh, can you explain EXACTLY how rule 6 applies? Word for word, I don't see a single thing that applies.

Just open your ISO as a file. Or right-click on the ISO and say Open With...The reason MPlayer and VLC is able to do this, is because they both have a built-in library (libcdio) which can read CD images. Not sure if it'll work with your particular file though.

"Media" -> "Advanced Open File"
Then either select the ISO in the "File" tab (select "All files")
or select "Disk", "DVD" and select the ISO as "Disc Device", either selecting "No DVD Menus" or not.

Just a late update on this in case anyone was curious (yeah right...)

It dawned on me to try to play the physical disc in my PC (I'm so used to ripping my discs w/ the PC to play them on the xbmc xbox that I kind of forgot that I could still play them on my PC). Anyway, it turns out this problem was a problem on the physical disc itself, as the same issues arose when I played the physical disc. Must have scratched it or something somewhere along the line. :-(
