AAAAaaaargh !
I've been encoding a whole bunch of PAL movies (using staxrip) only to find out now that the source is interlaced.
I didn't know the latest StaxRip doesn't care about the source being progressive or interlaced, therefor I always used the same simple filters :
MPEG2Source("N:\Mijn andere DVD films\Lili & Marleen (Seizoen 8)\ShrinkDVD1\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_1 temp files\VTS_01_1.d2v")
Crop(4,2,-0,-2)
LanczosResize(704,384)
Here (http://www.2shared.com/file/5114716/f5b9ff33/Lili_en_Marleen-Season08-01-Mexico_StaxRip.html) is the complete Staxrip log, If someone willing to help me out.
Please, can someone give me a clue about what I've been missing in properly converting this movie please ?
Also, In case I have to deinterlace it first, which are the more common methods used today ? (time is not important) :thanks:

Yadif (very fast + very good quality)

Yadif at least provides reasonable quality for its fast speed. TDeint is another deinterlacer worth giving a try.
(And make sure that you deinterlace first. Resizing interlaced material before deinterlacing will destroy it!)

... unless you're resizing in width only, which is fine (it might for example be interesting to resize a 4:3 NTSC DVD to 640x480 before deinterlacing, I know this is not the case here, but thought it was worth mentioning).

Well, yes. But usually you would resize in both dimensions in order to keep the aspect ration intact.
However even if I want to only resize horizontally, I'd deinterlace first. Given that I want to deinterlace anyway...

TDeint is another deinterlacer worth giving a try.
TDeint is useless. Too many problems with artifacts.

That's your opinion. I find it quite useful. It's much sharper than Yadif. Of course TDeint's thresholds need to be adjusted carefully...

Thanks a lot for the help everyone.
I'll try out every recommendation, and check the results.
:thanks:
Perhaps, If anyone is willing to look at the source, I could create a small .VOB sample,
and upload it somewhere, because you need serious knowledge about these things to first
understand if it's actually interlaced or just a crappy DVD, and which of the thousands of methods
would be prefered for the given artifacts in the source ?
If anyone willing to look at it, may I upload a sample, and where should I upload best ? Rapidshare or
something else ?
Thank you very much, I am learning but the avisynth world is gigantic for someone with little or no knowledge about all these internal and external filters.

Yes, it is interlaced.
Read the first two questions here to learn how to figure it out yourself:

That's your opinion.
Based on tests with footage taken by Canon HV20. Even changing default values didn't help. Only disabled motion algorithm helped but quality in this mode was worse than yadif's

i tried both Yadif and TDeint. tdeint makes sharper image i think but iu still prefer yadif.

Why would you want to resize the horizontal resolution before deinterlacing? Shouldn't it not affect the speed of YADIF (but possibly Tdeint)?...
