What happened with XMPEG ?

Hi guys, I was wondering, really often, what's happened with one FANTASTIC video encoding program, called XMPEG.

Their site still exist, www.xmpeg.net and last version is from year 2004 or 2005, if I am right.

Is author abandon project or what ?

Nope, nobody knows anything. That project has been dead for ages, and I don't see any hint of it to come back.

too bad, it's my, once, favourite program for video encoding.

Yeah I think the developer shut down the project because of legal threats... I am unsure though! That is what I herd.

Beyond that it might have just been lack of support/donations. I tried about 3 years ago to contact him to get hold of the source but to no avail.

Suppose Xmpeg has is another one to fall onto the pages of the history books never to rise again. Meh you never know I thought ffmpeg was a dead project and guess what! Right in the news feed they just released a new version...

At least xmpeg is standalone, other programmes don't rely on it for encoding. Staxrip/MEgui and other GUI's rely heavily on thinks like Virtualdubmod and Besweet, both of which are dead and buried! Virtualdubmod can be revived, since virtualdub is still being made and many of the virtualdubmod features (such as mpeg-2) are still being developed. Its the smaller features that just need updating and merged. The same goes for Besweet, it has been modified to support NeroAACenc etc, but it could be developed if someone wanted to spend the time on it. I think thats the main problem, development on these things stops as it does take a long time if only one person is contributing to developing it. We are lucky with x264 that there are a dedicated team behind it and interest is high, and although people rely on Besweet and virtualdubmod for their encodings as well, these are usually overlooked.
