View Full Version : ShaPLAY - Free DVD-AUDIO software player
One would think that ShaPLAY sends no video stream. Yet I found ReClock was resampling. That's why I started using the .dll from yesgrey3 (post # 81).
I'm glad a new verson of ShaPLAY will have the ability to control this.

so it doesn't say "(bit-exact)" even though there's no video stream? give a log to James if that's really the case...he'll have it worked out for you.

I tried b2951 in Vista32 SP1 - works as it must. I set 32bit output and mixing to 5.0 (I think it's your case)...
Are you sure that ffdshow version you use is installed and working correctly? Set audio ffdshow as default codec and try to play some files (6ch WAV will be the best test) in WMP or VMC for example. Or in MPC-HC, but disable internal MPC filters for raw audio. If you see the icon of ffdshow and all data on CPU tab is real - I don't know what is going on with you system. I use mostly XP (or MCE2005), but have also Vista 32 and Vista 64 virtual machines for testing. Everywhere ShaPLAY + ffdshow works (but Vista64 wants 32-bit version of ffdshow. May be becouse of 32bit ShaPLAY).
Hard to believe you, it can't be :)
May be old DVDAExlorer? ShaPLAY uses sources of DVDAExplorer beta 3 (2008.07.21).
Thanks Shadson - I will test ffdshow on another PC. That kind of thing is quirky. (BTW the ffdshow mixer is set to 5.1.)
And I assure you, that with my Talking Heads Remain in Light disc, ShaPLAY works beautifully, while DVDAExplorer Beta 3 throws a MLP decoder error (and if I set it to disregard errors I get 45KB wav files).

Can't it just *extract* the MLP streams?
Mark_A_W

Yes, extracting to MLP works.
But then I have a bunch of .MLP files. What can I do with them? In the end I want FLAC, so I can use a directshow player, and load Convolver plugin for Digital Room Correction (or a directshow filter for DVD-Audio playback).

You can hear them with WinAmp, or in MPlayer. :)
Also, you could try to uncompress them with ffmpeg,
IF they are the *non-complex* type of .MLP
( groups of tracks with different bit-depths and/or samplerates --- a feature *not* supported by the WAV container, nor by the FLAC file format, AFAIK :( )
P.S.:
Have you tried the "Split groups" option in DVD-A Explorer ? ? ?
No, I haven't tried Split Groups, I wanted a single WAV, but I understand what you are saying about the WAV container not supporting the complex file.
Use eac3to to convert MLP to FLAC.
This was the first thing I tried, EAC3TO says unrecognisable file type.
Thanks guys, and Shadson, sorry for derailling your thread.

I got both ShaPLAY-with-Ffdshow, and DVDAExplorer working...

Either there's some Vista32 issues, or just some issues with my PC.
Thanks for the help guys, and thanks for ShaPLAY Shadson.

EAC3TO says unrecognisable file type.
It's working fine for me:
MLP, 2/2 channels, 24 bits, 96khz
Decoding with libav/ffmpeg...
Encoding FLAC with libFlac...

I stand corrected. Instead of "groups of tracks",
I should have written "groups of channels".
Apologies. :o
well if your Waveout drivers, Reclock in KS/WASAPI is indeed a better choice...but you have to disable its prebuffer otherwise it glitches up the beginning of each track.
I see where to adjust/reduce ReClock's buffer amount, but how do you disable it?

You shouldn't have to.
If there is no video stream, Reclock won't resample. Something is wrong with ShaPLAY here - Reclock is detecting a video stream when it shouldn't.
And I don't get a glitch at the start of a track.

New Version 0.5a - with gapless playback, ReClock settings and ISO image support. Also some fixes.
I had too less time for testing gapless playback, so it is up to you - use it or not.
Thanks for the great update, Shadson. Gapless is sweet. Other new features work fine in my system, except it skips the first several (sometimes many) of tracks in most of the Titles of all my DVDAs. It always skips tracks of the first Title on the disc. For example, it may skip tracks 1-5 and start playing at track 6 and will play all tracks of the Title after that. Use Previous button to go back to tracks 1-5 and still are skipped. Use the >> button to go to next Title, and it may skip tracks 1-2 and start playing at track 3 and will play all tracks after that, but on some discs, it will play track 1 of second Title and all following tracks of that Title. But then may skip tracks in a third Title of same disc. I tried a dozen or so commercial discs before posting this.
Any suggestions? Maybe I have something wrong in my setup. I'm trying to use Kernel Streaming in WinXP via ReClock with resampling bypassed. Here are my settings (those not listed are defaults):
1. ShaPlay 0.5a:
check "Build complete DirectShow Graph"
check "Directly to DirectSoundRenderer"
check "Gapless playback"
check "Play 192 kHz tracks"
check "Force ReClock Bypass Resample"
check "Force ReClock buffer" and set to zero
press the ReClock button for Renderer GUID
leave the rest of the options unchecked
2. ReClock 1.8.4.4: set in Audio Settings Tab:
Device to use with Direct Sound = my sound card
Device to use with WaveOut = my sound card
Device to use with Kernel Streaming = my sound card
Audio interface to use for PCM sound = Kernel Streaming
Audio Interface to use for SPDIF/AC3 = DirectSound
Set all the option boxes unchecked
Leave all settings for other Tabs at defaults.
3. ffdshow not installed
I did not have the problem of tracks skipping with a similar setup in ShaPLAY 0.4a, but with 0.4a I was not using you new options for ReClock GUID and resample bypass. Instead, I was using your method of changing GUID in the configuration file and using the yesgrey3 .dll.
Shadson

puck,
attach both log files please.
Also try to find the option that cause this situation. Try w/o gapless playback first, not from ISO and w/o ReClock.
O.K. I fiddled with all the settings in ShaPLAY and trired every permutation. I learned that when I enable the gapless option, I get the skipped track behavior described in my prior post. Toggling any other option doesn't matter. I didn't change any settings in ReClock.
So it works fine if I don't enable gapless playback. But for me that defeats the main purpose of upgrading, because gapless playback is the best new feature.
Anybody else have my problem? I still would appreciate any suggestions.
@Shadson: Here are the log files for one example disc where I get skipped tracks. It is Sailing To Philadelphia (Knopfler). It skips tracks 1-5 of Title 1. It doesn't skip tracks for Title 2.
p.s.--I'm not playing from an iso. Skipping happens when DS Renderer is chosen (rather than ReClock) with either the default filter or wave parser. I haven't tried ffdshow yet, but default filter with DS Renderer doesn't use ReClock, if I understand it correctly.

The thing is, FFdshow does NOT work with my system, it crashes (I'm using Vista), and I am assuming other people who have complicated ffdshow histories would be in the same boat as me. Especially those who use it for HTPC playback, which ShaPLAY is most appropriate for.
Same for me on Vista. ShaPLAY + Ffdshow = crash.
Rebooting the PC into XP works fine.
I think there is a Vista issue with Ffdshow and ShaPLAY.
Midzuki

The gapless playback feature works fine --- :)
so far at least. :D
Notwithstanding, the EJECT button still does not close the disc tray.
But more importantly:
Note3: For gapless playback ShaPLAY tries to create a very long
WAV-file and to insert all data inside one WAV file. While the
maximum length of WAV file is about 4 Gigabytes, ShaPLAY has to
split the title on 2 parts (one will be the closest to 4Gb and
the second is the rest) with gap between them.
For 6ch/24bit/96kHz titles 4Gb is ~41min.
For 6/24/48 - ~82min.
For 2/24/192 - ~62min.
For long titles and big bitrates you will have one gap anyway, sorry.
Why not use a temporary .W64 file, then ?
Anyway,
:thanks: :thanks: :thanks:

So this is the thing I really want to clear up. How can we guarantee bit-perfect playback with no downsampling or downconverting?
Is reclock the answer? do you have to install some third-party reclock thing? And what reclock settings do I need to set in ShaPLAY? Any help is much appreciated. All us DVD-A fans want, is for it to work, and to know how to set it up so that it gives bit-perfect output.
The best, as already mentioned, would be asio. Many soundcards support it, many unsupported works with ASIO4ALL, and there exists help for implementing asio in your program.
I can understand that Shadson wants to hold on to his source code, even though he isn't allowed to, but if one or two of us could be allowed to help with implementing asio in ShaPLAY I think it would be great.

@Shadson, please respond:
@Shadson, DVDAExplorer is licensed under the GPL v2. If ShaPLAY is using the sources of DVDAExplorer it should be licensed under the GPL too.

I answered the same question at avsforum - the player is still incomplete and the code is ugly. I will not release the sources at this stage. But when I will finish the roadmap I described in readme - everybody can do anything with ShaPLAY. Even try to implement ASIO - I will not do it, it is not interesting for me. But beleive me - it is much more easy to write new player with ASIO support based on DVDAExplorer than add it to ShaPLAY.
Thanks for the great update, Shadson. Gapless is sweet. Other new features work fine in my system, except it skips the first several (sometimes many) of tracks in most of the Titles of all my DVDAs. These track skipping problems went away when I upgraded WinXP from SP2 to SP3. Apparently my operating system was limiting the size of wave files to 2 GB, and upgrading to SP3 seemed to remove this restriction. Large file size is important for gapless in ShaPLAY, per Note3 in Shadson's release notes. Shadson can explain why much better than I could.
Now I can add my voice to those reporting that ShaPLAY 0.5a works wonderfully well on WinXP. Gapless works fine with or without ReClock. With ShaPLAY's new ReClock settings, there is definitely no resampling in Kernel Stream mode. All the other new features work great, too. ShaPLAY 0.5a is certainly a very much appreciated upgrade.
p.s. - I should add that I was able to create, edit, and play wave files up to 4 GB in various programs before my WinXP system was updated to SP3. Playback in gapless mode with ShaPLAY was the only thing where I noticed this apparent wave file size limitation. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know why SP3 update fixed my problem; it's possible that this problem and its fix were just a quirk of my hardware/software configuration.

does anyone know if there's a chance to finally play DVD-A in full quality on a pc? i'm talking about using GPU's HDMI out to transfer 5.1 96/24 PCM signal to a external amplituner?
Mark_A_W
20th July 2009, 01:31
Yes.
Use Shaplay and Reclock in Wasapi/Kernel streaming mode.
That will pass unmolested audio to a HDMI audio output, or an analogue audio output.

i don't have a gpu with hdmi out yet, i simply don't need it, and i wanna be 100% sure that it's gonna work, as far as i know not all of the gpu's offer 96/24 5.1 PCM out, there's lossy ac3 and dts, but no uncompressed pcm, and that's the only option since there's no gpu with TrueHD or DTS-HD MA out (i think), so what kind of soundcard and gpu should i use? i'm not interested with analog output

@Biff84: I'm running an Asus Xonar HDAV 1.3 (http://uk.asus.com/Product.aspx?P_ID=wIxyLFT9vTWHLHk8). It's a sound card with HDMI in- and output, which is also able to provide a Protected Audio Path for Blu-ray playback. It is bitstreaming everything: PCM, Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD... just wonderful.
It works like this: The video signal from the graphics card goes into the sound card via HDMI or the included DVI->HDMI adapter. The sound card then adds the unmolested audio signal to the video in a protected, AACS compliant environment. The combined audio/video signal is then outputted via HDMI and may go straight into your AV receiver.

No the Asus Xonar HDAV does not come with a software player that can play DVD-A. It's bundled with a modded Arcsoft Total MediaTheater version which can not play DVD-A at all. But that's not a big issue as you may use ShaPLAY instead.
ShaPLAY + ReClock + WASAPI = DVD-A as it was intended to be

buletti

In WinXP you may use kernel streaming instead of WASAPI. ASIO is AFAIK not supported by ReClock nor by ShaPLAY. Shadson also made clear that he won't add ASIO support (http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=1291394&postcount=132) in future ShaPLAY versions.

Yes, it's called ATI HDMI Audio Device or somesuch.

maybe some people don't use foobar, winamp or WMP to play dvd-a isos, audio-ts folder and for others things...as me for example(maybe i'm alone), what i can do with foobar i can do with others soft tools/players.
i use ShaPLAY, VLC and MPCHC. with this players i can play 'everything' that i use and all are softs. each of this players have fantastics configurations to play as i desire.
foobar install lots of thing' and is so heavy(and came from hydrogen..full of kids.lol), the same with winamp and WMP that are heavy too then i can't see reasons to lock the thread as Shadson can surprise us with news...who knows?(i still wish)
i use ShaPLAY to 'play', i don't want players for convertions.
(for audio convertions i use eac3to(cool support and work, we all here know deep details about the support in this forum), is used in lots of 'front-ends', better treat with eac3to developer and helpers here than with foobar in hydrogen. when we post doubts about eac3to here we have solutions, when we post doubts about foobar in hydrogen we have discussions, foobar is famous but eac3to works but it's another story...err..for me is 'end of story' :p )
if Shadson don't back i will stay with one pc with windows 2000 only with Shaplay and 2Tb hd to play advd isos and audio-ts folder and sounds amazing via 5.1 analogs or optical but i don't will use foobar, winamp or WMP for this case.

oh yes, maybe is off topic(maybe not as we are posting about the player) but the problem is not how to install foobar,.. is 'how much' foobar install in the hd that i'll never use to only play dvd-a isos and audio-ts folder, the others 'argumments' and foobar possibilities are completely useless for me and will stay as garbage in my hd.
