View Full Version : Need help with finicky Blu-ray drive

I've had my Sony BDU-X10S for almost a year now, and it's worked -perfectly- up until now.

Problem is, I've run into a new type of DRM: My Blu-ray drive refuses to even open. </bad joke>

My computer recognizes it, but it seems like I can't get the tray to open no matter what. I can do the manual eject, but it won't close itself if I press the close button, or send any kind of signal to the drive to open/close.

This also happens regardless of whether I'm in Windows or not. I can't even open up the drive when I first boot up! Anyone have any ideas what to do? :( I don't like having a $200 coaster.

Sorry.

Get one of those nifty BD-ROM/ HD-DVD-ROM / DVD+/-RW drives. I think LiteOn makes one for about $90.

What would kill it? I assume you mean some type of DRM. I've not heard of a DRM that will coaster a drive. But then it is a sony.

No, I think the drive is just worn out :) If it doesn't open, either the motor is dead or the button is dead.

No DRM can kill your hardware.

It's just time to get a new drive.

In my experience if you turn the power off and do a manual eject with a paperclip, the tray will retract when the power is turned on. If that's not happening it's probably beyond repair.

The DRM-thing was a joke I guess :D

Anyway, I hope you still have your proof of purchase. It's still covered by warranty, isn't it? (in the EU, warranty is 2 years minimum)

Nope but was just making sure sony hadn't come up with something more evil. But realistically while there is no current crop of DRM that can do that I'm not going to rule it out. If the eprom of the drive can be flashed then all the drm would have to do is flash the drive with a bogus bios and instant brick.

Yes, that DRM thing was a joke. Hence the </bad joke>. For whatever reason, the drive is working again. I just removed the power and SATA cables (case powered off, power removed, obviously), plugged it back in and it worked again.

Odd, huh?

So it was just a bad contact? Lucky you!
Congratulations anyway :)
