Thats right FFmpeg group has finally released a stable version of the software, its been a while coming, so for now no more need to compile the latest dev version via svn or git.
Read the changelog here (http://svn.ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg/branches/0.5/Changelog?revision=17727) , release notes (http://www.ffmpeg.org/) and finally get the source code (http://www.ffmpeg.org/download.html#release), it will be a while before distributions start packaging this new stable release.
I guess ubuntu jaunty will have it in their repos since they haven't reached system freeze yet not to sure if intrepid will get an update though.
