Bad quality with Bluray playback

I have a problem when playing bluray movies in both Powerdvd 8 and Windvd 9. It looks like crap. I get big macroblocks and moving objects smear. If I open the movie file in the bluray file structure in media player classic and use coreavc to decode it, it looks good. I have tried to turn off hardware acceleration in the players, but when I start a bluray movie the option gets enabled anyway and it is grayed out so I can't turn it off. I have a Geforce 8800 GTS 640 MB video card and an Intel Q6600 CPU.

Does anyone know what might be causing this?

Try updating your Video Card driver (http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us).
Also, note that PowerDVD 9 is out...

I already have the latest drivers for my video card, but I will try powerdvd 9 and see if it makes a difference.

This may sound strange but try deleting AUXDATA directory from the bluray structure. This worked for me with powerDVD 8 and if it's the same problem I saw the closer keyframes the less chance you'll see it. I blame cyberlink decoder.

To do that I have to copy the files to harddrive, but I thought that powerdvd didn't support playing bluray from the harddrive any longer. It's a lot of job to watch a movie, but I will try and see if it works. What is the theory behind deleting the AUXDATA directory? Why would that work? And will the bluray play in a standalone player if you remove that directory?

I can't explain why deleting the auxdata fixed it for me with powerdvd 8. It's not something I'd ever think of doing but I was just happened to be testing the remove auxdata trick mentioned on this forum in a few players and I decided to try it with a problematic clip I had and it worked. I don't think many standalones will work without the auxdata directory, maybe none outside of samsung 1500/2500/2550 which needs the auxdata folder deleted to play encoded BD's. I'd say its safer to keep the auxdata directory unless you have a samsung player. You could also try the new powerdvd 9, I'm trialing it right now but it doesn't seem to play encoded BD's currently and nothing of interest to me has been added so I probably won't be purchasing it anytime soon.

I just tried to move the bluray files to the HD, but I can't get powerdvd to play them. It only works if I open up the m2ts file, but then I don't get the menu and the quality is the same with or without the auxdata directory.
