Welcome to the forums, jerry_garcia!

The DVD-Video standard requires video, audio and subpics encoded in precise formats. For the video stream, it's MPEG2. The picture size, the bit rate and many parameters are also important. You MUST use an MPEG encoder that is suitable for DVD-Video output, or the DVD authoring software will reject your video stream (or will re-encode it, thus degrading the picture quality.)

Thank you so much Sir! I used to encode my video to AVI and it took a long time to transcode before the burning process took place!

.avi exists for people who like to save on storage space be it either on their computer or on a DVD player that have DivX/XviD playback. As for encoding that all depends on how powerful your CPU is.

Anyways the video formats you want to burn with are .vob and .ifo. The .vob is the actual video file and .ifo is the information contained to it.
You also need to make sure that your folder/directory is named video_ts otherwise the files contained will not play.
Some easy programs you can work with are: DVDshrink and DVD Decypter.
