I am ripping DVDs using autogk. I am wondering if it encodes using h.264?

if not, is it possible to use this encoding to rip dvds into 1.4gb using any dvd ripper softwares?

Not sure I understand; you want
DVD => x264 => AGK/Xvid or
DVD => AGK/Xvid => X264 ?

Basically I want to encode a .vob file (or the whole dvd) into h.264 using any program out there.

I think it's better put...
DVD => X264 (h.264) .... if not possible, then....

DVD => AGK/Xvid => X264

What program can you recommend?

Hi,

Basically you start with a lossy source (DVD is Mpeg2 with quality loss), so you go lossy to more lossy; except if you go x264 lossless.
So DVD to x264 good file size/good CRF/good bitrate is the way to go;
After as you have the original just go from DVD to Xvid.
If you cannot start with the original start with an encode with the max quality possible.

For example I am testing with Star WarsIII, I go from DVD (VOBs are more than 6Gb/ around 5800Kbps bitrate) to x264 1/2 DVD size 2000Kbps CRF 18, audio 288Kbps AAC 6ch. I am also toying with anarmorphic encode same size and I sure don't master it (Megui x264 AvcHd preset)

For xvid I go to 1/4 dvd audio MP3 at 180Kbps, auto encoding resulting in 656*288 MTK sharp matrix.

I cannot recommend any x264 encoder being a complet noob; what I know is I will do x264 encodes to play with a mediaplayer like the WD TV Box or a BD player, encoding from DVD or BD when I will be equipped.

If you wander over to the Doom9 "MPEG-4 Encoder GUIs" forum you'll find lots of software. I haven't experimented with all of them extensively, but from what I've tried so far, I like StaxRip the best.
