Strange horizontal banding on my screen

I don't know the technical term for the artifact, but whenever motion occurs in video files the film seems to have horizontal bands or lines that make the image seem choppy. By judder I mean that if a character was say walking left to right his body would not move continuously but his legs might go before the body does as the horizontal line scans down the image. What's this artifact called and how does one get rid of it?

This sounds like interlacing, as I don't think you're using "banding" or "judder" in the way those words are usually used on this forum. Post a screenshot, please, and we can verify this.

Judder usually refers to the effect you get with 3:2 pulldown. What you are experiencing is probably interlace related. It could be the wrong field order or if done correctly will look fine when played on a DVD through your TV.

One screen shot will show if it's it's interlaced, but will not necessarily show if it's correctly done.

- Try a different renderer (For example in Media Player Classic under "Playback -> Output")

- Try to set a DirectDraw refreshrate that matches your screen (Run -> DXDiag -> Somewhere in the last tab...)
