Which media player software do you use?

What is your preferred media player? I like to use MPC-HC with ffdshow and CoreAVC. Since ffdshow is popular around here, it would be interesting to see which front end people use.

I'm using VLC on Linux and VLC + MPC-HC + Ffdshow on Windows.

I voted for VLC though since it got no votes before mine, which is a pity for such a great piece of software. VLC is not only a player but much more.

Please excuse my newbness, but why do you need "ffdshow" and "haali splitter" with MPC-HC? Doesn't MPC-HC come with its own full range of built-in codecs to play nearly any kind of format? (Just wondering, that's all).

It comes with it's own codecs, but I think ffdshow decodes some more formats and it also offers a lot of postprocessing options MPC-HC doesn't have on its own. Also there are experimental ffdshow builds with the new multithreading functions MPC-HC doesn't include yet.
Also the Haali Media Splitter handle MKV better then the internal splitter according to the MPC-HC devs. Personally I've never run into problems with the internal one.

Well, for me it's high-quality resizing, gamma adjustment and adding a bit of noise to my DVDs... and doing IVTC via AviSynth and TIVTC now and then.

To use ffdshow with mpc (hc or not) you could just enable the raw video filter inside ffdshow. That way one can use mpc's filters and still use ffdshow's post processing filters.

Actually the only reason I use MPC-HC is its DXVA capabilities! As you can see, I use DS filters for almost everything else. Most built-in filters are crap indeed :p

MPC-HC for everything video related except full BD's. For full BD's I use PowerDVD which I can't stand but it's better then the few other alternatives in my opinion. I really hope MPC-HC gets support for full BD's at some point.
For audio I normally use WMP11 because of it's simple yet intuitive library but for ripping I use foobar2000.

J River Media Center for all my media.
I use CoreAVC for non DXVA video and MPC-HC standalone decoder for DXVA.
With Haali splitter/renderer of course. :)

AC3filter for AC3 and DTS, ffdshow for other audio, except AAC, for which I use CoreAAC.

Besides DXVA (my video card doesn't support it), antitearing (Haali Media Renderer seems to already fix that for me without breaking menus), and extra codecs (already use ffdshow), what are the advantages of using MPCHC compared to clsid's patched builds of MPC?

BSplayer for everything, with ffdshow. I use BSP + Elecard to display DVDs. But sometimes it freezes...
MPC-HC with ffdshow for DVDs and all videos... looks more stable. But I like BSP more.

Crystal Player has (probably unique) feature of large-size output buffer. It helps very much when many postprocessing options enabled and overall speed fluctuates near to realtime.

Over here, the installed players (so far) are MPC Homecinema,
WMP 9, MPUI, ActiveMovie :rolleyes: and VirtualDub :p . Of course MPC HC rules, whereas the other ones serve well for comparison/testing purposes. For audio-only playback, Winamp and XMPlay have my preference.

I use Zoomplayer for file playback, due to the powerful filter control, and easy to use playlist. It looks nice too.


I use MPC-HC for Bluray discs, but not for MKV files fulltime yet. If Beliyaal's jitter reduction efforts work really well, I will probably migrate (although the experimental judder-free player is interesting). But I find it difficult to get all the filters I want loaded in the right order in MPC (I have a complicated filter path, due to using Digital Room Correction, and my video filter path is convoluted too :) )

MPC-HC here. Haali Renderer as the current top renderer of course, as madVR is a bit too early to use in practice. Splitting is done via Haali (latest beta version with x64 support) as it is better and also supports ordered chapters.

No DXVA here, my card is a bit old anyway and CPU takes pretty much all the 720p AVC videos I feed into the MPC-HC.

CoreAVC not even really used at all (why bovver, no need???), all AVC decoding is done via internal MPCHC decoder. Some old/obscure codecs are chained thru ffdshow instead. Audio chain is typically (ffdshow)->(AC3Filter), and AC3Filter alone if the audio is AC3/DTS/PCM and ffdshow is only used in case of vorbis/mp3/aac.
