I've had great luck with AviDemux in the past, but recently I reinstalled XP Service Pack 2, and now Avidemux cannot edit MPEG2 Program Stream files.
I've installed ffdshow codecs as well as AC3filter. When I open the files in AviDemux and view the Information, the Audio portion is grayed out. When I try to save (Copy video and Copy audio), I get the error message "There is no audio track".
I record these files from broadcast with an AverTV Combo PCIe. They play fine in Media Player Classic and Media Player, and GSpot recognizes the AC3 audio. Similarly to AviDemux, the files won't save in Womble MPEG-VCR either. As I said, I've edited these same files before with no problem. Any ideas?

Installing all these DirectShow filters will have absolutely no effect, if the application you want to use (Avidemux) doesn't use the DirectShow framework ;)

Could you upload a short sample or at least post the report from MediaInfo?

For some reason Avidemux fails to open that file with "Can't determine aspect ratio". I tried both, Avidemux 2.4.4 and 2.5 :(
After I demuxed the video stream with DGIndex, it can be opened in Avidemux just fine. Unfortunately DGIndex doesn't recognize the audio stream either

Weird! Actually that clip may be too short, but Avidemux does open the longer clips, just no recognition of the audio. Its so strange that the clips used to work in avidemux. Thanks for checking!
In other clips that were only trimmed with Womble, Avidemux does recognize the AC3 just fine, though I thought Womble did not re-encode.

What you can try:
1. Try to run your files trough ProjectX and see if it helps
2. Try open your files trough Avisynth + DGIndex

Thanks. Still making some headway here, but I wanted to see what you thought about some more mpeg2 file samples. Avidemux is recognizing the (same) audio after some type of conversion in Womble. Difference between Files 1 and 2?
File 1 is before conversion:

File 2 is after conversion:

The other interesting thing about this recording is the are the strange video artifacts.
Note the contrast to the third file - this one is after a conversion, but from a different broadcast. Works fine in Avidemux!
