Hey all,

I'm having a problem. I'm in the process of backing up my commercial DVDs that I bought. I recently bought a new Samsung DVD burner (DVD +/- R DL) but it won't burn discs that play in my standard DVD player. I'm using either DVD Shrink 3.2 or DVD Fab Decrypter 5.1.2.2, then burning with Nero 8. Everything seems to be burning fine, and the burned disc plays on my computer without any problem at all. But when I go put it in my standard DVD player, it doesn't recognize the disc. I've tried a couple things (and have wasted may discs in the process :)), and have no idea what the problem is. Here's what I have ruled out:

1.) The player. I use a Playstation 2 as my standard DVD player. I know this isn't the problem because I have made copies of my movies before and watched them on there with no problem.

2.) The blank disc format. I'm positive my DVD burner burns both DVD+Rs and DVD-Rs, but I tried it anyway since I have blanks of both. Both burned correctly without any problems, and both played fine on my computer.

3.) The firmware for the burner. Everything has been updated and installed correctly.

4.) The burning speed. This new burner has a higher burning speed than my old one, which I thought maybe my old computer couldn't handle. I lowered the burning speed and am still having the same problem.

Does anybody know if there is anything else I can try, or if there's anything else I have to do? Any help would be greatly apprecaited. Thanks.

Insteaf of Nero8, you could try Imgburn http://www.imgburn.com/

What's the MID of the discs you're using?

I'm not sure what the code is, but I tried Verbatim DVD-Rs, and Memorex DVD+Rs. Both have burned fine for me in the past, though I've used Verbatim much more. How do I get the MID code?

It will show in your burn log.

Hi!1.) The player. I use a Playstation 2 as my standard DVD player. I know this isn't the problem because I have made copies of my movies before and watched them on there with no problem. If you NOW play one of those earlier burned discs on your Playstation 2, does it play properly?

If not, try running a DVD/CD cleaning disc on your Playstation 2. Maxell makes one that sells for about $10US...

It does actually, thanks for the suggestion. I'm still trying to find the MID code in the log, but I can't seem to find it.

OK, I downloaded DVD Identifier and the MID Code seems to be RITEK. Thoughts?

Once upon a time, Ritek was the pre-eminent manufacturer of burnable DVD media, but that time is long gone. Ritek media currently has a very poor reputation.

I'd suggest you purchase some Verbatim DVD+R media and burn it at 8x or lower...

Yes, that was the MID of the Memorex discs. The MID for the Verbatims I have is MCC 02RG20. They are DVD-Rs, and I tried burning it at 8X. Is there a huge difference between DVD+Rs and DVD-Rs for my situation? Thanks for the insight.

Some commercial players support or DVD-R or DVD-R or both, look for in instruction.

Get a real DVD player, even the cheapest asian models are superior to a ps2. When I had video stores I had nothing but problems with folks who used ps2's, always complaining that perfectly good discs wouldn't play. I told them to take their business elsewhere
