View Full Version : Need advice on speeding up Blu-Ray>MKV encodes

Howdy folks. Last night I stepped into the foray of ripping and encoding my Blu-rays. I started out with the first disc of Wild China, a BBC documentary found here: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=777

I followed this guide using Ripbot: http://forum.videohelp.com/topic358185.html

At the moment, I'm on the second pass of an MKV encode at about 10% in with close to 20 hours estimated remaining. The first pass took a total of approximately 12 hours to complete.

Needless to say, I'd like to speed up my encoding time so let me break down my system specs and the settings I used to perform my first Blu-ray to MKV encode.

Current System Specs:

1. GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 Mobo
2. Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz CPU
3. SUPER TALENT 4GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
5. Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit

Encoding Settings:

Stream:

1. Stream fiile reported ~3 hr. runtime
2. Video 1080i/24
3. Audio 5.1 DTS
4. No Subtitles

Encoding:

1. Profile: HD, Blu-Ray, Consoles
2. Mode: 2 pass, ~6000
3. Lock Size [mb] ~8000

Picture:

1. Crop > Automatically
2. Size > Custom ~1280x720

Audio:

1. Profile: x.x COPY STREAM
2. Save as: MKV

Current status: Pass2... [11.7%] 37280/317634 frames, 3.83 fps, 6145 kbps, eta 20:19:02.

So basically, at this rate, it'll take me two days to encode this film. Are my settings (windows or ripbot) screwy somewhere? Is this just an abnormally large Blu-ray disc? Do I need better hardware? Realistically, with the appropriate system (faster processor?), how long can I expect this encode to take? What about 1080p discs with average length films of ~90 minutes?

Thanks in advance, I really appreciate the feedback.

That's pretty much normal max_raid, tho your 3hr first attempt is longer than most movies i.e. you can expect 1/3 less processing time typically. You really have to go Quad core to do significantly better (probably 3 or 4x faster than your current setup).

(Since the website you've provided a link to appears to be a legitimate "for purchase" site, I guess it's okay to respond here)

Hi!Needless to say, I'd like to speed up my encoding time so let me break down my system specs and the settings I used to perform my first Blu-ray to MKV encode.Use the recently available (presently freeware) "MakeMKV" which, WITHOUT ANY OTHER SOFTWARE, can both decrypt and convert your BluRay disc's main movies (and other videos on the disc, if you like), with no loss of quality, to MKV in less than one hour...

Thanks for your reply. I'll have to look into upgrading my processor to a quad core as 3 or 4 times faster is worth the money to me.

Any suggestions on the price/performance ratios on the current crop of quad core processors? The best bang for the buck.

Thanks for this suggestion. I took a look at the website for MakeMKV and the forums, however, I didn't see any mention of compressing the mkv files in order to make the resulting file size smaller. Does it do that as well or will it retain the same file size as the original?

@max_raid I didn't see any mention of compressing the mkv files in order to make the resulting file size smaller.Nor do I see anything in your posts to this thread making any specific reference to you wanting/needing to compress MKV files- Especially not in your thread title.

"MakeMKV" does not compress files or streams...

Nor do I see anything in your posts to this thread making any specific reference to you wanting/needing to compress MKV files-This seemed clear to me in his "lock size" specification.

This seemed clear to me in his "lock size" specification.

Right, I definitely don't have the drive space to store all my blu-rays uncompressed which is why I set the lock variable in the Ripbot settings. Thanks again for the help!

Now that your objective is clearly stated, I'd suggest that you might benefit (regarding both quality and time) from checking out the following link:

If you have a half decent Nvidia video card try Badaboom. They have fixed all the sync problems etc.. It works a treat.

Encoding 1080p content requires allot of power... E6600's are abit soft!

If your budget is high the Intel QX series of CPU's are super fast, but expensive, around $1500au for the QX9650....
If your budget is really high you could upgrade to the new architecture... Intel i7, they are extremly fast but your looking at a minimum of a New Motherboard, New RAM and of course the New CPU!

If you want a cheaper drop in replacement CPU look at the Q9650, sells for around $500au, I currently have a Q9550 (paid $400 au) and love it, packs a huge punch, runs pretty cool and has plently of overhead for overclocking, i've run it upto 3.4ghz so far with a Noctura C12 Cooler and it is very stable.

PS i only qouted AU prices as i don't know where you are and couldn't be bothered looking for a US retailer.
