1) Can a standard DVD burner burn standard DVD media in UDF 2.50 format?
2) Can a standard DVD reader/burner read standard DVD media burned in UDF 2.50 format?

2) no it can't without a driver (under windows)...Do you mean something OTHER THAN the UDF 2.50 driver?

what do you mean? Windows XP out of the box don't have udf 2.50 support (you have to install a 3rd party driver)...

No "standard" DVD media is in UDF 2.5 (only HD-DVD/BD). SD DVDs are all in UDF 1.02 (bridged with ISO9660) and that's what players look for in standard DVDs (well, micro UDF 1.02).

Are they not usable (either for copying to harddrive or directly for playback) via a standard DVD player?

@b66pak
Thanks for the link.
I see nothing in that wiki (or its additional links) that says you can't format a DVD-5 or DVD-9 using UDF 2.50...

yes it does...you play the BDMV folder on PC and the same BDMV folder burned using UDF 2.5 on standalones (or PS3)...you can play the disk under Win XP only if you install a 3rd party udf 2.50 driver!

who said you can't?

@b66pak
Let me clarify (Because I believe you and I are saying the same thing):
If I have a UDF 2.50 driver installed on my system, can I use a standard (NOT a BluRay burner/player) DVD burner/player (and IMGBurn) to format and burn a UDF 2.50 DVD-5 or DVD-9 (e.g. a compressed "Bluray package", created by BD-RB) that would be readable and playable by the same standard DVD burner/player (using a BluRay capable software player)?

@blutach
You appear to be confusing my reference to "standard DVD media" (DVD-5 and DVD-9, as opposed to BluRay BD-25, etc. media) with "standard DVD format"...

AFAIK while you can BURN a "BD-style" disc (with 2.50 profile) on a standard DVD burner (I use an old Pioneer DVR-109) you can't PLAY the resulting disc on the same drive! :eek:
I burn on the Pio, then check the discs on my GGC-H20L BD/HDDVD/DVD combi player. I use the Pio to burn just to save the H20L... :)
EDIT: WRONG! :slapshead: See next.

1) I have a UDF 2.50 driver installed on a system running Windows XP SP3
2) (With kudos to "jdobbs") I have successfully burned a 7.7Gb "BluRay package" (What you refer to as "BD-style") to a Verbatim D/L DVD+R disc formatted as UDF 2.50, using a standard (NOT BluRay) DVD burner/reader
3) After burning, I removed this disc and then reloaded it into the same standard DVD burner/reader - and was able to both "see" and play the video from the disc

@laserfan check the "Native OS support" form the wiki page to see if you OS can read UDF 2.50...if not then install a 3rd party driver...and problem solved...

Hi!Based on what I've just finished doing, it appears that you are mistaken.You are absolutely correct! I don't know what the heck I was doing/thinking when I wrote that--my homemade BD discs even play on my now-ancient Pio 103.
Sorry. I'm claiming a (well-deserved) Senior Moment! :o
