Newbie Question about Hardware buit-in decoder

Hello All,

I would like to know if there is one out there that has a built in decoder for AVC/H.264. I have an older Abit IT7-MAX2 mobo (P4 2.4, 2GB RAM) running on a RADEON 9800.

Most 1080p .mkv files run VERY choppy, even with the purchased CoreAVC codec pack or the free CCCP code pack. (Community created one).

I need to get a hardware-enabled decoder that does the job for me.

This of course needs to be an AGP card, since my mobo can only accept AGP video cards.

Your recommendations and responses are greatly appreciated!

None, 9800 was before they enabled avc decoding in gfx

Take a look at the AGP versions of ATI Radeon HD 2400/2600 or 3450/3650. They support full hardware decoding of VC-1 and H.264 (up to L4.1), but the AGP models may have more driver issues than PCIe cards.

The last time I looked at ATI AGP cards with the view to a possible upgrade of an older system, there were lots of driver issues which is why I thought "I will leave it and not waste the money".

But if you go with one then one of the above mentioned ATI cards are the ones to try. Then use Media Player Classic Home Cinema or KMPlayer to get hardware assisted decoding......with the 9800 you have zero chance as none of the drivers that support hardware assistance will install with that old card...I have a 128MB 9800Pro AIW myself.

I have a Radeon HD 3650 AGP, works fine here both in windows and linux.

Thanks for the responses. Couple of quick questions:

1) Would either of these cards automatically unload CPU off the decoding process? Or do I need to manually set some tweaks?

2) I just installed XP Pro SP3 fresh, then installed latest CoreAVC (v1.8.5) and finally installed CCCP and ZoomPlayer. I have heard that CCCP (or any codec packs for that matter) is problematic. Now what is the 'PROPER' process installing the codecs? (since I have the option to go back to my previous system restore point just before installing them)

You need to use a decoder that supports DXVA, like the filters in MPC HC. Some decoders may also require configuration to get hardware decoding enabled.

Simply install only the codecs that you need. Many people are satisfied with just ffdshow(-mt) and CoreAVC or DivX 7.

I have a 3650
its very nice but make sure you use the hotfix drivers!
you'll have to juggle versions till you get one that works well

8.10 are pretty stable, others not so much, though I haven't gone higher yet
