Hi guys,
I saw this phrase in the specs for a Fujitsu-Siemens display.
Resolutions
Pixels 1920 x 1080
Pixels expanded 1280 x 768

What does it mean by this?

It means that the display has (just) two resolutions that you can use: 1920 x 1080 (the native resolution) and 1280 x 768 (which is scaled to fit the native size).

I'm not so sure, this guy (http://forum.fujitsu-siemens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=35071) and this guy (http://www.avforums.com/forums/computer-monitors/898282-fujitsu-siemens-23-3230t-137-99-a-3.html#post8606745) have been able to set other resolutions.
I was thinking it's some sort of special resolution where the scaling is especially good or something.....
Anyway I spent my cash on RAM and HDD's, so a new display will have to wait now anyway :(

LCD displays only have one single resolutions. That's a fact!
Any resolution that differs from the display's native resolution will need to be scaled/resized.
The "pixels expanded" is just a fancy name for that. But all LCD displays will do it...

Can't some LCDs do a 1/4 resolution mode without interpolation? I.E. a 2560x1600 panel can do 1280x800 without interpolation? Just with larger pixels (obviously)

What you call "larger pixels" is nothing but a simple Point Resize (Nearest Neighbor), so it's resized after all ;)

Wouldn't it be possible, and wouldn't it look very good (aside from 1280x800 being a pretty low resolution for a 30" LCD!)?
I could've sworn someone in the know told me about this being a feature on some LCDs.

That's exactly what Point Resize (Nearest Neighbor) does when you double the size in both dimensions.

Any LCD will do that to display none-native resolutions. Of course they (hopefully) use a "better" resizer than Point Resize.

I know that LCDs will resize non-native resolutions.
Does a 2x2 point resize look all that bad ?? Considering the extremely high resolution of a 30" LCD anyway?

A 2x2 resize indeed doesn't look to bad on these 30 inches LCDs when only using GUIs.
But you'll loose Cleartype ability, cause now you got paired coloured subpixels.
And movies or images would look better if some better sampling would have been used.

Sure, makes sense :)
I was never a huge fan of ClearType at any rate.
I wonder about games though.. That's the only reason I'd run a 30" at quarter res.

1920 x 1080 is exactly 1.5 times the spatial resolution of 1280 x 768, so I guess there must be an extremely fast and quality preserving way to interpolate to that!

pathill, It's clearly capable of accepting more input resolutions, the question is why the need is felt to single this one out.
duartix, what do you mean? 1920x1080 is 2.1 times the resolution of 1280x768. 1080 is 1.5 times both wider and taller than 720p (so 2.25 times the size).
This isn't 720p though, it's close, but with a wrong AR. This is why I kind of worry that it's their way of saying 1280x720 isn't supported and trying to make that sound like a feature. Although I don't see why it wouldn't.
I might be back in the market for a 24" in a couple of weeks, not sure whether 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 is better.
