Elementary .DV streams to .AVI

Hi guys,

Are there any freeware applications that will allow you to mux elementary .DV streams into the .AVI container?

Do you mean take a raw DV stream and create an AVI or do you mean take two or more raw DV streams and create a single AVI?

If the first, our DV processor will do it. (Make sure you enable the 'Disable seeking/navigation' option so that the conversion is as fast as possible instead of real-time).

If the second, one of the DirectShow filters supplied with our software will let you open raw DV files in GraphEdit. Then you can use the AVI Mux filter and AVI File Writer filter to create the required AVI file.

Unfortunately I'm unable to get DV Processor to even input raw .DV files.... Here's a sample: -

For some reason your file contains 88 bytes at the start that aren't part of a raw DV stream which starts after these extra bytes. Hence, it isn't seen as a true raw DV stream. The bytes look like they've been added by some Quicktime-based software. Is that the case? There are some readable strings ('fiel', 'pasp', 'clap' and 'colrnclc'). The video is a very dark scene of a 6-carriage passenger train.

The DV sources I've received were indeed muxed into the .MOV container (I presume using FinalCut Pro on a Mac). I used YAMB/MP4box to extract the elementary .dv stream.

My goal is to mux the elementary .dv stream into the .AVI container so I can work with it using VirtualDub ;)

And yep, it's a passenger train alright :D

Do you have many files like that? How much size in total?

It would be pretty straightforward to write a simple utility to strip the extra info from the start of the file so that you can use them. I'll see if I can do something tomorrow.

Yes I have a few dozen now.....

Everything used to be sent to me in the form of miniDV or DVcam tapes. But with download speeds increasing, the preferred method of distribution (from some US and UK production studios) now appears to be DV within the .MOV container.

Anything you can do to help me out would be much appreciated.

For an ongoing need you may want to consider the Pro version of Quicktime (about $30 or so). It will convert MOV to AVI and will understand the files you are being sent (your clip opened in my QT player). I don't know if it can do batch processing, though.

I actually have QuickTime Pro. I use it to re-mux .MP4 files to .MOV with metadata information.

Unfortunately it can't re-mux DV in .MOV files to DV in .AVI, it re-encodes them :scared:

It can however re-mux DV in .AVI files to DV in .MOV without re-encoding...... Typical eh? :(

Thanks for dedicating so much effort into this Johnny.... However, I did as Blue_MiSfit suggested and gave MPEG_Streamclip_1.2 a try..... And would you believe it, it can mux (QuickTime) .DV steams directly to .AVI without re-muxing.

Helpful people like you guys is what makes this forum is so addictive :)
