hey all,
the quality of video from a DVD is SD? how come??i'm asking because i want to convert my DVD movie to something with h.264/AVC1 codecs and put it in a mkv container.it's also called mpeg-4 codecs right?.so,is it advisable to do that??
also,any software recommended??

Yes, DVDs are standard definition. You may certainly encode them to H.264, which is not just useful for HD: standard definition DVD content will still benefit from H.264 improvements over older codecs. The MKV container is also fine.
H.264 video is also called MPEG-4 AVC (Advanced Video Coding) or MPEG-4 Part 10. When, for instance, Apple says an iPod is compatible with MPEG-4 video, they generally mean MPEG-4 Part 2 Simple Profile or Advanced Simple Profile (ASP); therefore, to make clear what you mean, it's generally better to call H.264 as H.264 or AVC.
You can encode a decrypted DVD to H.264 video in an MKV container (with basically any audio and subtitle streams you'd care to use) with several applications discussed here at Doom9: please read the "MPEG-4 Encoder GUIs" subforum for suggestions and usage tips.

thanks inspector gadget..i've read the 'MPEG-4 Encoders GUIs' forum but i'm stillllll confused..arghhh..ok..maybe i need a tutorial...
i know i have to rip the video and audio from the dvd first right?
so i'll have two VOB files..one video and audio...then,what do i do next???
