View Full Version : MeGUI preset for encoding SD 576i PAL?

I used MeGUI several times to encode HD material for viewing on the PS3. I used the Standalone-AVC-HD preset, then authored the output as AVCHD disks (using tsMuxeR) on DVD physical support and the results were excellent. So far, so good.

Now, I have these standard definition PAL (576i) files filmed by a friend in Europe with a digital camcorder. I need to transcode them to h264 because the original format won't play on the PS3 (it's some sort of MPEG codec in a weird encapsulation - the extension is .MOD). I want the output format to be playable by the PS3 and by the usual software players on Windows/Linux systems. I've a couple questions about that:

Would the Standalone-AVC-HD preset be OK for this? I know this is not HD material, but the preset has worked very well so far. I also have a bunch of other AVCHD videos from another source (my HD camcorder) and I'd like to keep everything as uniform as possible. It shouldn't create any problems if I use this preset on an interlaced SD PAL source, right?

If I take the resulting h264 and ac3 files and run them through tsMuxeR with the output setting on "Create Blu-ray disk", and then burn the result on a DVD, will it be compatible with the AVCHD standard? In other words, is it allowed by the AVCHD disk specification to have an SD video track alone? (which is also PAL and interlaced)

I know many players (especially open source) will play it no matter what, and possibly the PS3 will too, but I'd rather not make a disk that's too different from any recognized standard, even if it's "playable" on some systems.
