Making VOB files for PS3

i have given up on ripping dvds to different codecs as what ever i do black scenes are always blocky. As Hardrives are so cheap and PS3 can play .vobs i have decided to just rip the dvds to vobs. So my questions are as follows.

1. Ripping to vobs are 1:1 dvd quality or is any quality lost in this process?

2. I used anydvd to rip to hardisk but then what can i use to make like 1 vob 1 film or 1 episode of a tv show.

All i want is the actual tv show/film no menus or extra features.

1) Ripping the DVD to your harddisk will not result in a loss in quality.

However, is it necessary to merge your vobs? I believe that the PS3 is capable of reading the vobs just fine when they are split up. Any hardware player worth it's salt should be able to.
