What is the proper, if any, video codec to select in MPlayer for playback of an M2TS file?
Also, if applicable, what is the proper demultiplexer to be selected?

mplayer should select codec automatically (ffh264 or ffvc1), if you want to try another one, run mplayer -vc help
for demuxers, i had better luck with -demuxer lavf when it comes to m2ts files

Thanks for the info. Although I failed to mention that I'm accessing MPlayer via the SMPlayer GUI, I'll try to follow your suggestions ;>}

Then you can select "lavf - libavformat demuxer" from the "Demuxer" tab in the "File properties" dialog, instead of passing the "-demuxer" switch manually.

Can that be done BEFORE loading the file into the player, or does one have to load the file into the player first?

No, you have to do it after the video has been loaded.
