Bangkok Dangerous poor video quality

Just because it's blu ray does not mean it's going to have a good picture... I watched this movie the other night and could not believe how much noise the picture had. The video quality was about on par with DVD except with a lot more noise. I did a quick google search and found out that I was not quite alone with my impressions of this movie. I've seen so many movies coming out on blu ray lately and I have to wonder how many are just 'shovelled' onto the new media with little or no picture improvement. I suppose the movie was just filmed that way to begin with.

I think the word you're looking for is "grain," which is an inherent property of any film. Some are grainier than others depending on the film stock and other factors. Also, please realize that Blu-ray doesn't mean "grain free." It'll show up in your DVD or Blu-ray version depending on whether the studios decide to do some filtering.

Just do some light degraining with something like MDegrain2/3 ;) I processed 300 with it and it came out looking good.

A very subtle amount of grain can make the picture look better, though I agree most blu-rays I've seen are overdone in the grain department, and also lack the picture quality one would expect. I think the commercial encoders they use don't contribute much to a good quality encode either. A good upsampling DVD player seems to give a better picture on a TrueHD than the same title in blu-ray, and that just shouldn't happen in theory (but makes for a much cheaper alternative)

I processed 300 with it and it came out looking good.

300 was done like that deliberately for artistic reasons as the director intended it to give the film a certain look.

Everyone has different tastes though. :)

Yes, I realize that, and that's exactly the point I'm trying to get across: Some movies are naturally grainy, whether for artistic or technical reasons. The studio that transfers it to Blu-ray may decide to do some preprocessing before they make the BD master, and if they don't and you find the picture too grainy: Just do some degraining!

Yep. some parts of the film was filmed underexposed and grainy on purpose, and its just that Blu-ray is good enough to show it. I remember some people saying how 300 was awful because of it, and it was on purpose there as well. Not talking about the original poster, but sometimes I wonder if the people who do the loudest complaining has ever seen anything in the theatre or just don't do any research into the director's style before complaining.

@Ryokurinits just that Blu-ray is good enough to show it.No "special magic" limited to the BluRay version. the standard DVD version clearly exhibits the intentional graininess as well ;>}

Funny thought when I first herd of HD I figured due to advertising HD was just that. Cristal clear w/o Grain and Interlacing ect...

"HD" just means resolution: Higher resolution than standard definition (SD). You can have a HD video camera that suffers from horrible noise, but that doesn't change the fact that it's HD (1920x1080p, for example). It just means the sensor is really crappy and mucks up the whole video.

I know like I said I figured because of adverts and the way they made it sound... My opinion is moron movie masters should not have access to Graining filters. Movies like 300 where they used low brightness and a blend of colour correction and grain filters gave it an artistic effect but the way over use distributed on movies like Bangkok Dangerous is Stupid..

IMO, most of the people working on these masters should be shot and replaced by gurus at doom9 ;) Every movie coming out would look amazing then.

Unfortunately that won't happen any time soon. So best we can do is work the magic when we get the DVD or Blu-ray..
