Installing filter in mpc e.g. Haali Splitter?

How do i install it?

I think i got it right, i deselect it in the Internal Filters section in mpc then manually add it by browsing the Haali ax file in it's installed folder and choose prefer?

Do i also have to change output to Haali Renderer?

That is all! It is not needed to mess around with the external filter settings. (what you did was wrong anyway)

You can select Haali renderer in: MPC Options -> Playback -> output

When installing, I prefer to deselect all options so there are no changes nor automatic association (though that may be okay for a simple setup and particularly non-configurable player).

Then, to add as an external filter, select "Haali Media Splitter (AR)" from the list (no need to browse for file). The internal splitter must generally be deselected to use any external (though there are cases where it is still overriden) but whether to set any external splitter to prefer, block, or merit (default or otherwise) just depends on what others are installed and personal usage.

If different configurations are required for optimal playback of different sources, then rather than frequently toggle filters or rely upon merit, it may be preferable to use different instances of the executable with the option "store settings to .ini".

Haali Renderer is not required to use Haali Media Splitter and may not be desirable (i.e. no DXVA nor mirroring).

Dunno what you mean im sort of a newbie. How can i save diff instances for diff sources? Where's .ini file?

So it's not recommended to have Haali Renderer with Haali Splitter? Should i only have Haali Splitter with e.g. the VMR9 Renderer?

edit: for some reason haali splitter doesn't show up in the filters drop down menu in mpc what's wrong?

Go to View - Options - Player, enable "Store settings to .ini file" and it will be created with the same name of the executable: mplayerc.exe will create mplayerc.ini.

mplayerc.exe can be copied to different folders or simply copied and renamed in the same folder. The ini file can likewise be copied and renamed before changing settings if it is mostly set up how you like already otherwise it can be created fresh. Pay particular attention to file format associations as only one instance should be associated with a format. For simplicity, one could remain the primary and others not be associated at all and only be run from shortcuts.

So, as many different configurations as you like can co-exist:
mplayerc.exe
mplayerc-svn.exe (for test version)
mplayer-bink.exe (for 6.4.7.5, last version to play smk & bik files)
mplayerc-whatever.exe

I also like to make a copy of my primary player ini just as a backup since if something goes really wrong the external filters may be purged and it would be a hassle to add them all again.

Regarding the last bit, i think it's in use, the haali splitter tray icon opens everytime i play a mkv file for example, don't know why it doesn't show up in the mpc menu?

Haali Media Splitter is not displayed by name during MKV playback as it is with TS but it is probably at the end of the filter list shown with the file path (confirm by going following the arrow to its sub-menu and clicking on properties). The tray icon can be disabled from there.

Btw which renderer do you guys prefer?

With XP I prefer VMR7 windowed since I use DXVA and mirroring. For SD sources such as ASP/Xvid, subtitles work fine with external DirectVobSub since DXVA is irrelevant. While for HD sources, subtitles are more often either encoded in the video or in disc format and thus played with PowerDVD instead. In the rare case of HD with an external sub, then I can fall back to VMR9 renderless and just move MPC-HC over to the movie display.

I use EVR CP because I use H.264 DXVA and the internal subtitles renderer otherwise is would be Haali renderer.
