hi,

i did search, but could not find a tutorial to suit my needs. (sorry if that may offend you) if there is one then please link to it. what i would like is a noob's guide to re-encoding (is it?) a bluray movie. and when i mean a noob tutorial i mean one as easy to follow as this one (http://www.ultimate-dvdr.com/anydvd/4290-anydvd-hd-tutorial.html). (but not for using anydvdhd since i know how to do that, i only linked that specific article to show the kind of tutorial i prefer. one with pictures. :) for starters.)

this is what i would like to do:
1.) insert a bluray dvd into my bd drive (check, i know how. easy peasy.)
2.) rip the whole disc using anydvdhd (check, i know how. easy peasy.)
3.) use a program(s) to remove EVERYTHING but the actual movie itself and then re-encode/save, or whatever the specific and exact term is, and make the movie into ONE file. i guess avi/wmv hd or mkv will do. (this i need instructions for)

i would so much prefer a one off tutorial. (instead of reading a separate one for each step that may be required) i understand that step 3 is the most involved and that's the one that "scares" me somewhat, if only because i read that you need to adjust sound settings and that can cause a 1-2 second de-sync which stuffs the whole movie and so on. but if i have a tutorial like the one i linked to, but for my step 3 request, then i will have no issue following it to the word.

ps: i can easily follow dos prompt commands, and as long as written in good english - anything.

thanks,

linyx

Note, you can skip the encoding and just mux to a mkv which will cull a lot of time from the process and should only take around 30-60 mins depending on machine specs.

PS in regards to your fear of 'step 3' if you follow my guide you'll have a perfectly synced mkv

Hi! mkv will do

How about something new, that's so simple, it doesn't require a tutorial?

"MakeMKV" v.1.02_b864, WITHOUT the use of AnyDVD, appears to be capable of both decrypting and converting even the most recent of your BluRays to .MKV format with what amounts to the click of a button!

If you read my posts in the two threads related to "MakeMKV", you'll see that I was clearly very skeptical of its professed abilities up through v.1.01_b650. That has all changed (for the better) based on the results I've obtained using the newly released (one day ago) v.`1.02_b864.

Try it, you'll like it ;>}

BTW - It also works with standard DVDs...

trying it right now. but one thing already failed to impress me. this was the following "error":

Stream #1 of type 'DTS-HD audio' was skipped, since it is not supported in BETA version

oh, ok, so the best audio is not available ???? (and with my noob experiene in this field, i assume that, that, IS the best audio stream on a bd disc ?) {if i'm wrong and sound like a cock, pardon me. but a beta should have the full features. i should really wait for it to finish but it has another 45+ minutes to go, so i'll reply now anyway, and edit as needed.}

perhaps i should restate what i want:
i want to place a bd disc into my drive and do the following:

1.) copy it to the hdd* (and doing so, remove any copy protection and HDCP requirement - what anydvdhd does!) and of course during this stage not loose ANY quality at all - whatsoever.

2.) use a program (the simpler the better) or several programs if need be, to remove everything but the 1080 version of the movie and the best audio track possible and the main english subtitle. (i want to keep the main english subtitle in case there is a scene where they speak a foreign language, so i understand what is said.) so i want 3 things: 1080 video + best audio + main english subtitle. i don't want the menu or additional interviews or a 480 version or a french audio version, or a chinese audio version or any such crap.

3.) when complete, i should have one file (avi/wmv/mvk) that can be played on most current and popular players like vmplayer, windows media player 9 and above, wmp classic, and the others.

isn't there a program like auto gordian knot but that supports bluray ? i know agk actually installs some other programs and isn't ONE program, but in a way it is. IT does all the work for you in the background. all you do is set your settings and BAM, away it goes. i so wish there was.

(also after i see how this goes i'll try the other suggestion from that link - with all those dos prompt commands. it's just that i always try the easiest suggestion when available. i'm so fing lazy... forgive me partners.)

:thanks:

* if the copy to hdd can be done on the fly and works 100% then so much the better. then i can skip that part.

Stream #1 of type 'DTS-HD audio' was skipped, since it is not supported in BETA versionThat's a rude awakening, since I don't believe the author mentions that limitation anywhere...

I'm going to post your (disappointing) "discovery" in the thread started by the author ("Mike Chen") in the Decrypting sub-forum here.

i don't want any trouble.... :o

was i right in saying that the DTS-HD sound stream is always the best one ? ..because i'm just guessing.

as a side question, is there a chart, if you will, that shows the best audio streams in order of best to worst ? it would be useful for when a disc has several audio streams for the movie itself and you want to only keep the best one. most of you probably know this already, but i don't - although i could probably guess by their name - mostly.

i would think the list would look something like:
dts-hd
something 5.1
dolby something
stereo
mono

i now did one test and am pretty happy for what it does so far.
i "ripped" reservoir dogs. the disc is 23gb. i selected only the movie and the single file it produced is 15gb. not bad. i "watched" the movie and it seems ok, including perfect audio - ie: not out of sync. (other then it didn't extract, what i believe, to be the better quality audio stream.)

so as far as i'm concerned, i think i may have just found THE program i imagined. i do wish it had more options, but for now it will do.

You're certainly not starting any trouble.

LPCM would fall into the category of "Stereo" - and audio purists would tell you that LPCM is the truest audio format...

If you want better audio, convert the DTS-HD stream to DTS with eac3to, SurCode DTS encoder will be required for this.

funny you mention LPCM, since i also got that now as well. movie it happened to is pirates of the caribbean

hmmm, it's also been going for 9 minutes on the processing titles screen, that normally takes 1 minute. (tried 3 discs prior and they were all around 1 minute)
the bar is about 60% of the way, and it estimates another 6 minutes. but i think it's wrong and is either stuck or something funny.....

nah, after 20+ minutes, i aborted.... i won't melt my disc.... ;-)

Thank you for the information ;>}

If you haven't already done so, I'd suggest you read the MakeMKV thread in the "Decrypting" sub-forum here...
