VLC Player and VC-1

According to the VLC website, starting with v.0.86 for Windows, VLC has been capable of playback of files containing VC-1 video.

Yet, whenever I try to play an M2TS/BluRay file with VLC (I've tried v.0.86 and 0.98, it generates an error stating that "VLC is not able to playback VC-1 video format - and nothing can be done about this").

I presume I'm doing something wrong. Anyone know what it might be?

same filetype you mention, and the same error.

I just find strange the part of the error that says "and nothing can be done about it!"


The file plays no problem in WMP. with ffdshow.


no-one seems to be able to say why VLC gives the error or why it cant be fixed.

It's working fine for me.

However keep in mind that this build is NOT a release.
It's a TEST build from a work in progress. It's not meant to be used on a regular basis.
So expect some bugs, some parts to be non functionnal yet or even broken (new core) and feel free to report any problem on the VLC forums (http://forum.videolan.org) ;)

Just to let you know that the version of VLC you provided a link for does not playback the video portion of .M2TS/BluRay files. It still generates the following error:VLC is not able to playback VC-1 video format - and nothing can be done about this.

Yep there are still some issues.

Some of the samples I have are playing fine, some other ones don't.
Sometimes VLC is trying to use the Windows DMO codec for decoding VC-1, for some unknown reason because VLC has its own VC-1 decoder, but this process actually fails in v1.0.0, and VLC hangs, whilst it's working fine in v0.9.x. Unfortunately the splitter of v0.9.x is not working properly with most of the .M2TS.

EDIT:
Oh I forgot to tell you to delete the VLC preferences folder made by a previous version of VLC before running the new version.
Delete this whole folder: %appdata%\VLC

Sample with VC-1 + AC3 + DTS-MA in M2TS which is working fine for me with VLC 1.0.0:

It looks like the "nightlies" web page is ALMOST back in action...

Again, I'll ask if I'm misunderstanding something:

As of 4 days ago, the page for "nightlies" was up and running. However, the Windows directory was and still is empty.

Does this mean the site is still having problems - or can it be that there haven't been any nightlies for quite some time now?

The server is back online but the build system is not set up yet.

In the meantime you can use JB's builds for Windows from here:

Don't expect a miracle with VC-1 though. Some videos are playing fine, some other ones are not showing any image and some other ones simply crash VLC. And it doesn't matter which container is used.

Keep in mind they are TEST builds, not for a regular basis usage and it's still a work in progress.

that was EXACTLY what i was thinking when i read your post. sorry, i'm a noob too and opened this thread hoping to find some answers. thanks for all who posted, and i really had a good laugh about the "nothing ca be done about this" part. :p
