View Full Version : bd rebuilder compression errors?

For anyone that has made an AVCHD backup of their blu ray disc, have you noticed an occaisional compression glitch in the video? It may only occur 2 - 3 times in an entire 2 hour movie, but the few avchd discs I have made all have this. It usually seems to affect the lower 1/4 of the video and it will pixelate heavily for anywhere from 1 - 3 seconds. It is definetely something in the encoding as the compression artifacts are visible on my standalone player as well as powerdvd. It's probably not an issue with bd rebuilder itself since it uses another program for the encoding. I'm just curious if anyone else has seen this...

Overzealous attempt by x264 to ensure VBV compliance, probably.

Harass akupenguin to implement the promised VBV for B-frames, and harass Dakaz to finish his threaded lookahead patch so we can work on VBV lookahead.

Or harass me to commit the hack-fix I came up with a while ago.... and hope that it solves this problem. If you want to help, encode with this x264 (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?cugmzznrmzz) instead of the included one and see if the problem goes away.

Overzealous attempt by x264 to ensure VBV compliance, probably...Is "ensuring VBV compliance" *easier* and less likely to result in glitches if vbv-bufsize and vbv-maxrate are bigger numbers? Or no difference?

IIRC BD Rebuilder uses bufsize around 14500 and maxrate ~17500, which are much less than others of 25000 and up that I've seen folks using.

I will try it tonight.

Encoding should be done by now, but I won't be able to view the output until tonight. Can you tell me what revision the x264.exe you posted is based upon? I was looking at the website and 1090 seems to be the latest. I did not check which one bdrb is packaged with..

RobIt was like 105x or something, but with a small modification of mine to hack around a certain bug.

I tried the x264.exe that you provided and re-encoded a BD movie to a DVD9 using the latest bd-rebuilder. I'm happy to say I saw no glitches at all throughout the movie.

For reference, I will attach 2 pictures to demonstrate the glitch effect I was seeing in my previous attempts to re-encode using bd-rebuilder.

I'm doing another encode tonight (q6600 @ 3ghz) and will let you know how that one goes as well.

Thank you for your help so far and answering my questions.
