Matrix for High Bitrate HD encoding

Hey all,
i'm using PS3 media server to stream HD content from my pc. It basically transcodes everything you throw at it using mencoder and mpeg2. I have set keyint=1:vqscale=1:vqmin=1 encoding parameters in mencoder and i'm on a gigabit network, so size is not an issue. Currently transcoding 720p content peaks at around 50Mbits and quality is very close to the original. But i guess i can squeeze a little bit more by using a different matrix.
Any suggestions ? Maybe Fox1 ?

I guess you just read the topic, because I didn't ask for the best. I just asked for a matrix that keeps more details than standard mpeg matrix under specific conditions. Anyway, i removed "Best" from the topic.
As far as i know this does not violate the forum rules.

Transcoding 720p content PS3 peaks at around 200mbits/sec !!
I suppose this is pretty close to lossless right?

True, but it's a real and very good matrix. I've seen it on a commercial retail DVD by itself. It's also used in CCE's AQ encodes as it's the Standard Matrix with the numbers quartered. I was just taking mezzanine at his word:

The Fox1 matrix is good.

The sole reason it's "good" is because it compensates for the lack of a properly logarithmic quantizer scale in MPEG-2 by setting the values as low as is sanely possible, allowing a more H.264-like quantizer range at high bitrates.


... despite the fact that MPEG-2 does have an option for logarithmic quantizer... an option almost nobody uses :D
