"The Express" decrypting problems

The latest (beta) version of DVDFab Decrypter was unsuccessful. While scanning the disc it would fail and crash.

I was able to make a successful back-up using RipIt4Me in conjunction with DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink and FixVTS. Although there are many alert and warnings that pop-up, just click through them and continue. I utilized every step in the process including cleaning up the VOB files before loading into DVDShrink. The process took a little bit longer than usual, but I was able to complete a back-up and proof-watch it. Turned out flawless for me.

May want to note that the compression ratio is pretty tight, but I'm not sure if the outcome would be the same if only the main movie and menus were done. I would imagine so.:helpful:

I'm trying to back this up also, and DVDFab just crashes while reading the disc even before I can hit the start button. I'm trying RipIt4Me per your suggestion. I did get a funny warning saying I only had 100Gb on my hard drive and it needed 200Gb or something like that. I haven't used RipIt4Me in forever because DVDFab has been solid for my backups ever since I started using it.

I got the same problems. i used ripit4me and dvd decrypter and dvd shrink and then i put it on my hard drive but when i got to use clonedvd to burn the files it comes up with an error stating there was an unexpected error.

when i open up the audio file folder there is nothing there. the video folder has all of the files but no audio to be found anywhere. i don't know what fixvts is but i have never had a problem using ripit4me and dvd shrink and decrypter then clonedvd to burn it... Please someone help me!!!

It's normal (mandatory?) to have an empty AUDIO_TS folder on a Video-DVD. All data (audio and video) is in the VOB files in the VIDEO_TS folder.

From the problem descriptions it sounds like yet another variant of "structural" protection, that can't be handled by DVDFab yet. So wait a few days ;)

Yeah, I got the same memory warning. Just click "yes" and choose to proceed anyway. Once you import the PSL file and finish the rip process then you'll have step 3b (I think) and choose "Do It" to do a rough clean-up. Once that completes then you'll have the option to "Open in DVDShrink" or "Clean-up VOBs". Click "Clean-up VOBs" and it will use FixVTS to do this. This process took a little bit and there were a lot of error windows that pop-up, but just click through them.
When it's done you can open it up in DVDShrink. Once it loads you might notice that the "Main Movie" file when you play it is actually bonus material, and the "Unreferenced Material" is actually the main movie. Yeah, I thought it was messed up too. I processed it and burned it to a disc using DVDDecrypter and played it in a standalone player and it turned out fine despite all the ominous errors.

FixVTS is a free program correct? I don't want to download a bad copy so does anyone have any idea where the best place is to get it? It doesn't look like they have their own website.

Also when do you use this program. do you run RipIt4Me then shrink then FixVTS?

FixVTS is a free program correct? I don't want to download a bad copy so does anyone have any idea where the best place is to get it? It doesn't look like they have their own website.

RipIt4Me does not need FixVTS.

ok to FixVTS is in RipIt4Me so i don't need that but i still need to know if i can upgrade from dvdfab 4 to 5 without paying or do i have to buy the upgrade?

The free version is still free. If you were a registered user of 4, then you would be able to get a new license key for 5. I am not certain if you would have a free trial for Platinum 5 if you have already tried Platinum 4. And - you can keep 4 on your PC while trying out, or using 5.

This may just be coincidental, but after attempting to rip The Express with both RipIt4Me and DVDFab5 my dvd burner no longer seems able to read DVD's. I have uninstalled/reinstalled the drive and flashed the firmware but neither action seems to have any effect. Needless to say, I have tested the drive with other dvd's and am still having no luck. Has anybody else experienced anything similar to this and/or have a solution fro fixing this drive?

I would have tried running a DVD/CD cleaning disc on the drive before flashing the firmaware...

Hmmm, trying to read the corrupted ("copy protected") disc may have put a high amount of stress to your drive.
This may very well be the deathblow for an old DVD drive...

Anyway, to make sure that this is not a driver/OS problem, try to boot a "Live" Linux directly from DVD...

I'm guessing that my dead drive is not a cleaning issue since it's only a month or two old. Oh, and here's where it gets even stranger - the drive will read and write CD's without any problem, it just doesn't seem to like DVD's anymore.

It's sounds like I'm the only person here who has had this problem, and it's only a $25 fix, so I'm not losing any sleep over it, I just wish I could understand what forces might be at work here. If my (apparently) damaged drive is not just coincidental with trying to rip this particular DVD then it's scary to think that there is some sort of DRM that could damage a drive...

Well, in theory they could silently install some kind of Rootkit on your system (as Sony has done in the past) and then patch your drive with a "faultily" Firmware in order to disable DVD reading.
But is that realistic? I don't think so! But who knows ^^

One burner we know about, so far :p

(I already said that this is very very unlikely to happen, while a dying DVD drive is nothing unusual at all. Nevertheless it still would be possible - in theory. Not that I expect it to happen any time soon)

(Also note that such Rootkit - if it did exist - probably wouldn't start it's evil work unless a blacklisted DVD ripping software is detected. Not directly after disc is inserted)

I didn't mean to suggest that the disc ruined my drive, it's just a surprising coincidence. I ordered a new drive an am sending my 60-day old Samsung drive back to the manufacturer for replacement so it's no major loss - it's just odd....
