View Full Version : BD-5 stutter problem

I've been attempting to make a BD-5 (I don't want to argue whether it's true BD-5, my player calls it AVCHD but plays it like a Blu-Ray) for a short film I worked on, complete with menus. The authoring has been going well in Adobe Encore CS4. However, upon burning the project to a DVD+R (Taiyo Yuden) yesterday using ImgBurn, I found it to stutter in my Sony BDP-S350 Blu-Ray player. It is a bit peculiar, it plays fine for 10 seconds or so, then starts to stutter. If I pause it and press play again, it plays fine for about the same length of time, then begins stuttering again. The stuttering even happens on the menus (but only the music since they aren't motion menus). I recall having similar problems with my HD DVD player early last year when trying to create my own discs, and although I'm not absolutely certain of the cause, I think what it came down to in that case is that the bitrate was too high. It also seemed to work better when I used DVD-Rs.

So a few questions:

1. Is DVD+R acceptable for creating BD-5s, or should I use DVD-Rs? My DVD burner doesn't support changing the booktype, so that isn't an option.

2. What is the maximum bitrate for BD-5s? I encoded the video as MPEG-2 in HCEncoder, average bitrate 25000kbps, max bitrate 29000kbps. I set the maximum bitrate in Encore to 40mbps. Also, are there any incompatible settings in HC I should watch out for?

3. Any other suggestions?

I tried to give enough information about my situation in this post, if you need more I'll gladly supply it.

um3k, you probably can't do more than 18 or 20 mbps for DVD playback. DVD spec is 10 megabits/second, although most DVD-ROMs can handle double that. I bet the stutter will go away if you limit yourself to 20 mbps or less.

If you played it on a PC it will probably play back at 4x speed or more. Standalone players will be a lot less.

Ok, I'll try again at a lower bit rate.

It was simple enough (though a bit time consuming) to reencode the video at a lower bitrate. However, I've run into another problem. I want to add music to my menus, which are static. Encore insists on encoding the menu as a motion menu, which I can accept. Problem is, it's encoding them at a ridiculously high bitrate (30mbps), and there's simply no way to change this within Encore. I've also had no luck trying to get it to pass through an already encoded menu. So, I'm wondering, is there any way to replace the menu m2ts in the authored Blu-Ray folder with a lower bitrate stream? I would prefer a simple method, but even if I have to jump through hoops, I'd be willing to give it a try.

It is not possible to remux m2ts with new video stream, unless you can find muxer application that can handle all types of BD/AVCHD streams (incl. IGS).
