Hello everybody.
I have odd problem with one of my files. It is AVI and I would like to convert it to MKV, using mkvmerge 2.4.1. Unfortunately resulting file is 12 hours long. It plays, and I can rewind it as long as I will stay in first 10% of the player's slider. I saw same problem on the various forums but no solution at all. Is it some kind of well known bug or something?
I tried to make MKV in AVIMuxGUI and the resulting file was alright but I miss a lot of required settings I'm used to from mkvmerge. File coming from AVIMuxGUI can be muxed again in mkvmerge but for some reason it ignores all changes I make.
Also, I can mux video with different audiotrack and the result is alright, which means problem is in original audiotrack. Have no idea even where to start.

Post a sample that you cut with VDub or Avidemux and people can take a look.

Hello Inspector, good idea, thank you. I cut out first 38 seconds of the movie and the resulting file is actually displayed as 2:32:

Your sample works fine for me. VideoLan, Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (both internal and Haali's splitter), AviMUXGUI and mkvinfo all tell me it's 37.5 seconds long.
There's probably a problem with your player.

Hello sneaker_ger..You are definitely right, MPC-HC(Haali) displays the right time but WMP doesn't. I know that it is not the best of all the players at all, but still it means the file is not 100%..

I just tried WMP 11 and it was exactly like you said, the duration is shown as 2:32. It didn't even play my video until I applied a registry patch (from here (http://a8t8.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!2518DD508BB713E8!220.entry), where the problem with the wrong duration is also described.) I demuxed the tracks and remuxed them with mkvmerge, avimuxgui and GDSMux. All have the same problem. I guess it's just a bug of WMP 11 and you can't do anything about it. They work in any other player (Including the old Windows Media Player 6.4.) The files should be fine.

Did some more tests. Same problem also accurs for mkvs with h264 codec but WMP 11 displays mkv files created with Divx7 just fine (correct duration). So there must indeed be a difference. But I have no idea wether it's a bug in the muxers, Haali's Splitter or WMP 11...

sneaker_ger, many many thanks for this extensive testing. Hopefully it will draw an attention to this and will help to identify the issue. Till than I will stuck with the file as it is, I can repack it anytime and most of players has no problems with that. Thank you.
