I couldn't sleep last night, and so finished up a bunch of blog posts which hopefully merit a post here in the aggragate.
First, I've got a lengthy look at Expression Encoder 2 SP1 and its Smooth Streaming and multibitrate encoding features.

how about the possibility that 2pass encoding with EE2 could be split as two jobs for not so powerful PC?

You can certainly specify single threaded encoding in that case, which would simply things somewhat, and probably would be a little bit faster in the cases where outputs*threads is a lot more than the number of cores in the machine.
Memory is probably a bigger concern there than CPU speed, though - since you can share source decode and some preprocessing across outputs. As long as you're not swapping, running a huge number of threads isn't going to be any slower than seperate jobs in terms of how long it takes to get your final file encoded.

no i meant this Live Silverlight Streaming of Barak Obama's inauguration :P and are you going to use the same Bejing framework in it's back ?
Btw i had a lot of fun with your What happens in Vegas 2 mbit VC-1 AP DNLA Encode and Transcoding it to H.264 :) seems that encode is still nicely compressible (even in 1 pass and Realtime) for the 10 hours you Encoded on it with Expresssion Encoder ;)

i think you misunderstand me...by spliting i mean instead a 24h 2pass encoding session a 1st pass overnight session and the 2pass next night (like x264 encoder can do!).

It's a new player (a lot simpler than the Olympics one). And a pretty basic one at that.

It's only alpha right now, but it's working pretty well except for an inconsistat display frame rate.

10 hours for "What Happens in Vegas?" Did I say it took that long? Normally I can a good quality 720p24 movie trailer in about an hour.

and sorry i didn't wan't to be rude the 10h of course was a little off originaly it took you 2H ;) it's just damn impresive how much H.264 (X264) gets in Realtime out of your EE2 Encoded VC-1 Entropy Visually :)

I don't know if its competitive against anything in particular. It's more an effort to codify best practices in media players, and share source. The broader goal will be better, richer media players, rising the tide of the industry.
Akamai's leading the project and I don't want to speak for them, but I don't know that there's any reason why HTML5 based players couldn't be included if that becomes a widely deployed technology down the road.

There's been a lot of great optimization work in x264 certainly.
Of course, I didn't given any consideration to encode speed in that encode encode in my sample, so it's not really a quality @ speed data point.
