xvid in avi or ac3 in mp4 ?

I'm thinking of abandoning the avi container entirely, and converting (muxing, I will NOT re-encode) my old backups from xvid+ac3.avi to the mp4 container.

But ac3 is officially unsupported in mp4, so my question boils down to : is it more of a hack to stuff xvid into avi or ac3 into mp4 ?

I know the obvious answer : remux into mkv. Trouble is I have no familiarity with mkv. And I'm somewhat a fan of mp4.

Suggestions, anyone ?

MP4Box supports AC3 in MP4 if compiled with the liba52 library :)
