Following this guide -> http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/gknot-main6.htm
I've obviously not installed the x264 codec properly as when I click on 'First Pass' for the x264 section nothing happens. What have I missed while following the guide? :confused:

You'll need the last VfW compatible version of x264. The latest one won't work with Gordian Knot.

And it's generally advised not to use x264vfw anyways. There are much better GUIs if you need to encode with x264.

Thanks, could you make some recommendations? I'm a noob in this department.

I've used staxrip before. I'll probably go back to that. Is there any particular one you would recommend for any reason?

Is there any particular one you would recommend for any reason?It depends on what you want in a program--do you want something simple and idiot-proof that just does the job, or do you want something fancy with lots of features and the ability to tweak everything?
Programs like Ripbot264 are more towards the former end of the scale, while MeGUI is way off the end of the other.

If you still want to use x264 VFW (although it's not the recommended way) you can find more or less recent versions here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=213809
Otherwise I'd recommend to give Avidemux a try, besides the other GUI's that have already been mentioned:

An x264 guide for Avidemux can be found here:

I like these.
RipBot -- Easiest to use.
Staxrip -- Easy to use but you can get to all x264 parameters
AutoMKV -- Fully featured.

For what it's worth, I just finished encoding the same episode of a show with the exact same parameters with Gordian Knot (using x264vfw) and Handbrake (Used HQ x264 preset), and I can tell no difference. On the plus side, Handbrake was much faster.
