I know MPEG-4 ASP has been widely used for DVDs for a long time. And MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 is widely used for HD stuff...my question is: Is anyone switching purely to H.264 and abandoning ASP? Could I get the same video clip to a smaller size but same quality using H.264 instead of ASP in terms of non-HD? Thanks.

Resolution is completely meaningless. H.264 is always going to give much better results than ASP.

I assume he means that ASP is used for DVD Ripping.

h264 is already widely used in "non HD" roles....

The codec has nothing to do with the resolution, the reason h264 is used in HD alllot is because it is a very efficient codec, you can fit more data in the same filesize as ASP....
Sony PSP's Officially supported codec is h264 same for ipod and many other portable devices for the same reason mentioned above, higher quality for same size, even my Nokia N95 natively records videos in h264.

ASP ala Xvid/Divx is mainly used in DVD Rips by for lack of a better word Pirates, when Divx came out is basicly when pirated DVD's started appearing on download sites, the reason it's still in use i guess is old habbits die hard.... also allot of stand alone DVD players support Xvid/Divx so these guys are doing it to support those.

I have personally been ripping my DVD's in h264 for a couple of years now.....
