View Full Version : MeGUI + FAAC bad encodes, hissing

I'm using MeGUI 0.3.1.1009 + FAAC 1.26.1.

Up until last Wednesday I was having no trouble converting .AC3 files demuxed from DVDDecrypter into .mp4 files a-la FAAC. The output I have now is garbled, has a high pitched loud hissing noise, and you can barely make out the actual sound behind the distortion, it's almost like turning the volume all of the way up and recording pure distortion.

Has anything with MeGUI (or its updates) changed recently? I've tried downgrading back to 0.3.1.1006 and get the same results. I'm not using DirectShow to decode anything.

Any reason not to use NeroAAC ? It's free and commonly regarded as better quality...

I've been using FAAC for a very long time so the familiarity of how it's used in relation to the kind of quality the output will be is the driving force behind why I use it.

Generally I always encode against a quality quantizer instead of specific bitrates; in terms of MeGUI, that's exactly and the only way FAAC operates (though I know from the command line so much more is possible).

I'll give NeroAAC a try and see what it does; I don't want the point of the original question to get lost if another codec works while FAAC continues to produce bad output.

this has been fixed...and yes, there are some improvements in current/next releases for audio transcoding.

Thanks for the info. NeroAAC did work properly, but I'm glad to hear FAAC is going to work again.
