MeGUI: Confused if soource is Progressive or Interlaced

Hi all,

I've been ripping movies for some time but am relatively new to MeGUI, and I have a question regarding Progressive or Interlaced source detection.

I pretty much follow all the steps for basic ripping as outlined in the Wiki, and 90% of my rips are from PAL Region 4 DVD's.

During the D2V index creation phase of ripping, D2V Creator almost always detects my DVDs as Interlaced (Top field first). However, when using the AVS Script Creator for the same movie, if I choose 'Analyse' (under the 'Filter' Tab) it almost always say my source is Progressive. Which do I believe?

In my (very limited) experience, I was under the impression that most PAL content was Progressive by default. Is this too simplistic (or wrong!)?

Any help would be appreciated.

D2V Creator reports how the stream is *encoded*. That is not always the same as the actual nature of the video *content*. For example, progressive video can be encoded as interlaced. If this confuses you, you'll need to do some homework on video and MPEG2 encoding.

What to believe? Your own eyes are best. Separate the fields and step through. See here (first FAQ):

Also, another tip. Don't ever use the "auto detect" tool from MeGUI.

what the heck? it worked perfectly fine with 99% of the sources i fed it.

Thanks for the reply... your link was very useful. I will try analysing some of the movies I've already ripped in VirtualDub to see if they are indeed progressive or interlaced.

To be honest, most of the movies that I've converted to date have been treated as Progressive (using the preset DXVA-SD-HQ) and they look great, with no discernible interlacing on playback. So I think I'm mostly doing OK. Besides, encoding as progressive is soooo much quicker on my system (~8 hrs) compared to a de-interlacing job (often >24 hrs). Having said that, I'll definitely use your method to check future DVD for accurate states.

sadly there is no perfect interlacing/TC detection method.
megui does its best to detect them but there are too much variants...
that's the main reason of the presence of the avs preview button.

Np, even though it wasn't intended for you. It may work in some cases, but will never work as good as being able to see with your eye and then discern from there what to use. Also, I wasn't trying to "insult" MeGUI or you, it's just that the autodetect tool messes up a lot, and your post above this one confirms that. Perhaps I'm just like this because I've gotten used to using my eye's to determine how to de-interlace/IVTC.
