h264 1080 at high bitrates in DVDs

Hi, it's me again with some weird questions.

Recently I've been encoding videos in x264 at 1080p High Profile and an Unrestricted AVC Level.

As we know, bitrate peaks can be REALLY high. But I want to burn these videos to DVD-Rs.

I was wondering, 8x is the max read rate of some DVDs, and that's like 8 mbps, isn't it? What happens if I burn a video with peaks of 10/15mbps? Does it have any trouble to play in my PC, are there any risks?

You got things a bit mixed up. 1x DVD is roughly ~11 mbps. (If it were any lower, then the commercial DVD players we have now would be absurdly noisy or they wouldn't run at all since they're all 1x). If you read at 8x though, you'd have a max bitrate of ~90 mbps. More than enough for any reasonable encoding.

For full HD compatibility the specs say that dvd drives have to be run at 3x speed!
Unfortunately most DVD drives play at 2x! You'll get stuttering. Higher dvd drive speed leeds to more noise.
(For example: game consoles like Play Station)

For good play back performance at 2x the max bit rate must be limited to 15 Mbit/s. But that's not good for 1080p content.

So convert to 720p and use the following VBV entries:
--vbv-bufsize 15000 --vbv-maxrate 15000

Theese values guarantiee that the vbv can hold 30 Mbit/s peaks for one (edited) second. After that the encoder lowers the bitrate automatically.
