File Type to Make DVD's?

I record TV shows onto my PC and every once in a while I edit out the commercials and then put them on DVD's.

I use VideoReDo TV Suite to edit the commercials and then save the new file as an .MPG.

Then I use Nero Vision to put them onto a DVD and let Nero encode (or whatever it is that Nero does) before it actually puts the files onto the DVD.

Is there any file format that is more compressed than an .MPG so I can fit more content onto the DVD?

If you are talking about an authored DVD, then MPEG2 is required by the DVD specification. If you are talking about using a DVD as a data disk, then consider AVC video.
