Checking a new DVD, possible?

Hi all.

Can someone please tell me if there is a program (preferably a freebie) out there can will test a new (unwritten to) DVD prior to writing to it so as to ascertain if it is indeed "capable" of being written to?

I ask this because at times my program (mostly dual layer) goes pear shape and I get an error message to the effect that the burn process could not be started.

As a consequence, I do not know if the problem was caused by a faulty DVD or the program barfed for some reason or other. I do not like the idea of throwing away a perfectly good DVD just on suspicion alone.

When I examine the DVD I can see nothing, but that is not to say that something may have already been "Just" started that I cannot see, but just enough to sabotage the disc.

Can any one help here please.

They're two different programs, but both are from the same author and have a very similar display of the status of a disk.

Hi Guys.

I have tested the DVD 9 with both programs and both give it a clean bill of health yet when I want to use them with FAB DVD 2.70 (Express Mode) and later with FAB DVD Platinum 4, both times the DVD is ejected or (in this case the No 4 version) I am told that it is an single layer and requests a dual layer disc.

Something is rotten in Denmark me thinks.

I will have a go for a dual burn (same disc) with ImgBurn and see what crops up. I will then try with different discs also.

I think that I may have stumbled onto a few duds is the bundle pack which has the name of www.ple.com.au, a local vendor.

I have a program that actually examines the DVD to ascertain who were the makers of the disc and from memory it was Rhicho or something resembling that name, I think the name is the same as those guys that make the cameras bearing the same name.

I will advise (eventually) what eventuated.

Hi setarip.

The read out is as your top readout, showing that it is in fact a DVD+R DL disc.

Here is the rub of what I have done and I think after reading this you will have to agree that the media (discs) I have on hand from this lot are all defective.

I ran my remaining 6 discs through the program 'DVD Identifier' and it showed that manufacturer to be RicohJPN (I think that possible stands for Japan) and the reading also showed that it was a DVD+R DL.

I then tried all 6 to burn a copy using the following programs:

DVDFab Platinum Express 2.70
DVDFab Platinum v4.1.2.0
DVDFab 5.2.2.2 (latest trial version off the net)

Img Burn
DVD Decrypter (ISO and the other one IFOs or whatever)

One of the versions of DVDFab gave me an option of selecting a burn engine. By default it came up as VSO, the other options were, Nero Burn and ImgBurn. I tried all three with the same result.

All the programs went through the decryption phase right up to the burn stage when a message was displayed "unable to commence burn phase" or words to that effect. :mad:

The bundle of discs came in a 10 disc package, Two of these discs I gave to a friend by way of a replacement (haven't heard back from him as he is on holidays). One I threw away as it stopped in mid burn (this was some weeks ago, instead I used a single layer disc with success) and I do not remember what I did with the remaining of the 10.

My DVD burner is:
(LG) HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4120B- [FW A117] -[ATAPI] and supports:
DVD+R
DVD+R DL
DVD+RW
DVD-R
DVD-RW
DVD-RAM

So there you have it. Tomorrow I shall be returning the blanks to the store and listen to what their excuses are.

As has been posted by MANY people at MANY forums (although, of course, there are always detractors), far and away the only consistently reliable double layer burnable media continues to be Verbatim 2.4X D/L DVD+R...

I went out an bought a 10 pack of Verbatim 2.4 DVD+R DL, popped one in and it worked a treat.
