I've been successfuly backing up regular DVD's with no problems for a long time. Now I'm wondering if backing up of Blue Ray discs is pretty easy or not and whether a copy will play on a stand alone Blue Ray player.
Can anyone suggest a place where a beginner can get information to get started?

There isn't a lot of good collected information in an easily accessible place.
Here's the basics:
1) Ripping BluRay is indeed quite doable, and not terribly difficult, provided you're comfortable with some basic CLI (command line) stuff.
2) You need a couple of apps, only one of which is payware - Slysoft AnyDVD HD
3) AnyDVD HD decrypts the disc on the fly, and then you can use eac3to to find the title you want from the disc, and extract the required streams (optionally converting the audio at the same time).
4) Then you can either re-encode the video track with x264 to save space, or leave it as is. If you're worried about standalone compatibility you need to follow pretty strict rules regarding compression settings. MeGUI makes this easy, thankfully :)
5) Finally, you can mux your audio and video tracks to a format you're comfortable with. TSMuxeR can create a BluRay file structure which can then be burned on BD-R discs (expensive). I prefer to mux to MKV with MKVToolnix, since I play everything on my PC
That's about it. Feel free to ask any other questions

Check out my guide (see my sig). It was specifically written to help beginners. Hope you find it helpful.

this is a good start for someone learning how the process works.
it looks more complicated than backing up DVD's.
my questions are, can the blu ray be backup onto rewritable blu rays discs.
also is there certain players that play rewritable discs. i have my blu ray writer and ps3 for viewing
thanks for the help

Of course it can

That one is harder to answer as it depends on the BluRay player in question, i would assume most would but again, differnt brands/models support different features and formats
If you have a rewriteable disc give it a try, if you never try you'll never know.
