DVD Quality - Some Tests

Can anyone tell me how I can rip sections of these DVDS for testing, including some of the menus that I use for testing menu layout.

It would be nice to also come up with a "suite" of de-interlacing tests, like the suites I see used for testing hardware de-interlacers to see how they detect frames. If anyone can come up with a list maybe we can track down some clips for use in testing especially when the advanced detection algorithms begin being implemented by the developers.

I also have to upload nv12 color output on my nvidia card to show you ATI users how bad it is for me on nvidia.

use something like dvd rebuilder of dvd shrink, or even dvddecrypter wait for them to copy the menu(losslessly) and when the copying reaches 100MB terminate the program.

I actually already have the DVDS on hard drive, copied originally with DVD Decrypter. Maybe at least for the menu quality tests I can provide some of the smaller ifo/vob files that could show the menu.

You can use VOBBlanker (http://download.videohelp.com/jsoto/vobblanker.htm) to turn animated menus into static images and to remove parts of the menus and audio, thus cutting down on the size quite a bit.

yeah some sample for chroma testing would be much appreciated, especially the one in your test on the nvidia.
I'm discussing with tritical to see if he could offer spline36 chroma upsample in his ddcc Avisynth plugin, but we need a way to test it :)

I have uploaded the original vob file that I use to test the color/chroma. Its actually difficult to spot the difference now that I am using a HDTV but rgb32hq is defo not as good as nvidias conversions IMO. Let me know your results.

Updated original post as I have found some more weird results regarding colorspaces. I find that if I use EVR instead of EVR-CP I get completely different results. Maybe its an nvidia bug, I don't know where the problem might be but also getting different results from one decoder to another......

Still stands that rgb32hq in ffdshow isn't as good as nvidias conversion though (when it decides to do it properly).

Tried HR now and have the results there. Its getting a bit messy now with all of these combinations but I guess it has to be done. Haali did as good as EVR, looking good in yv12 and nv12 but completely hangs on me with yuy2. Once I saw a "Macrovision failed" error at the bottom of the MPC window.

HR only accepts YUY2 & RGB32...prolly your media player used EVR or Overlay?!

Ah right ok. Haali also doesn't let me click on any DVD menu items.... So its useless to me unfortunately. Looking forward to the new rgb32hq :) I wonder how long it will take to see this in ffdshow... weeks?

BTW those new colorspaces tests I ran on my nvidia card were using Windows 7.

Note: My best combination of mpeg2 decoder and renderer and colorspace output at the moment is

Renderer: EVR-CP (because of EVRs weird aspect ratios and Haali's inability to click menu items in DVDs, hopefully evr-cp gets improved to not drop as many frames randomly)
Decoder: libmpeg2 (because libavcodec still has problems being a couple of pixels off in some DVD menus and libavcodec gets field order wrong for some interlaced content, might change if one or the other gets advanced interlaced/progresive frame detection)
Colorspace: yuy2 (because in this combination of renderer and decoder, yuy2 is the only one that looks perfect and also lets me send interlace flag on for hardware de-interlacing, might change if ffdshows rgb32hq gets better)
De-Interlacer: Hardware (Some tests I have show it to be still quite a bit better than yadif aswell as being very fast. Might have to change if ffdshows gamut conversion gets upto scratch and rgb32hq output is used).

I am sure these choices will change quite a bit over the coming weeks.

HR works perfectly fine on DVD menus in XP w/ KMPlayer.

so how does the chroma look like in HR/YUY2 then ?

well I don't think it will ever make it to ffdshow, or maybe so ?!
anyway, you still could run the ddcc Avisynth plugin in 1:1 mode so it doesn't make any gamut conversion I guess :o

Haali completely crashes with yuy2, I think something to do with Macrovision...... :S

well HR doesn't accept YV12/NV12, most likely MPC has reverted to Overlay..so what you are seeing in not the YUY2>RGB32 PS conversion from HR.

what if you use DVD43/AnyDVD to kill all protections then ?

Maybe Haali is broken in Windows 7? Using yuy2 and rgb32 mpc+haali crashes. I can't get to the haali options because of this. And yes I think using yv12 / nv12 must resort to evr-cp or overlay.

Might take down haali results as they are pointless...

Right click in mpc-hc, select "Filters", then the renderer. Haali's renderer gives an options screen, overlay just shows the pin-in info with "clsid" in the top line or two.

hey mark, so do you know some foolproof ffdshow settings for PAL 576i by any chance?
I've never been too lucky w/ YADIF(I can't afford the double framerate mode), and the best results I get are w/ Gabest's MPEG2 decoder in "auto" mode....even tom'smocomp lags behind, and I don't believe Gabest's does fields blending :o

Hey leeperry, what do you mean by not lucky. Too slow or bad images? I found using yadif and libavcodec gave me problems with some interlaced content, it got the field order wrong some of the time. Finding out now that using non ffdshow mpeg2 decoder with yadif operating when it shouldn't, can cause freezes some of the time so I guess the solution is libmpeg2 in ffdshow as the only other internal decoder that can be used to avoid all of these issues.

My de-interlacing settings are basically yadif, double framerate, and everywhere in ffdshow that has an option for interlaced / progressive, I force it to progressive. Even in ffdshow de-interlacing options itself I force "deinterlace frames marked as progressive" because I even have content that is not marked as interlaced that badly needs deinterlacing.

Essentially for the moment anyways I take complete control over whether I deinterlace or not. (Actually have wiimote button set as keyboard shortcut to enable / disable ffdshow deinterlacing) :D

well I tried it yesterday on some 576i original DVD, I tried libavcodec + YADIF(all possible settings) and it looks terrible....some sort of ugly posterizing ?!

even tomsmocomp looked better, but I can't use double frame rate I got too much Avisynth scripting running to afford 48/50fps :o

Gabest's MPEG2 decoder in "auto" mode still shows some slight combing, but it's very watchable
