View Full Version : Lowest AVC bitrate for Blu-Ray ?

I am getting a bit frustrated with authoring software as it seems to not let me go below a certain bitrate, in some cases the lowest is 10mb, others I might get down as low as 4mbps. Now, I know people will wonder why I want lower then 4mbps, but I hope to encode SD material on a BD disc, as lots of authoring software allows 720x576 in AVC for Blu Ray. When using AVC I can get very good quality at only 2mb, perfectly fine for SD. Yet I can't seem to find authoring software that will go this low.

So a two fold question, one is what is the lowest bitrate a blu-ray player will play AVC on a BD disc ? Also what are the current crop of BD authoring softwares out there for the average user (nothing complicated) ? I currently know of and use Roxio Ultimate and Nero 9. TMPG Authoring Works looked good until I noticed it doesn't do AVC. Are Media Chance on the case with Blu Ray software by any chace ? I loved their DVD Lab software.

Thanks in advance.

I don't recall the Blu-ray spec saying anything about a minimum bitrate.

That is promising then. Thanks.

Have similar experience, but found the minimum AVC video bit rate bit rate depends on the size (bitrate) of the audio file.

Maybe trying low bitrate audio such as AC3 @ 192kbps might help.

Saw almost all commercial Bluray disks are using MPEG-2 for SD material (e.g. extra's). Gives less hope their is a workaround for low rate AVC...

If I remember correctly, the Transformers Blu-ray contains a 1080p and a 480p version and both versions are encoded to H.264/AVC.
