Folks,
today I was just testing my last DVDFab Platinum version, trying to play the "Street Fighter - The Movie" (1994) R4 Brazilian/NTSC disc. I purchased this title years ago, and now I was trying to watch on my HDD.

It was released on 2002 by Sony/Columbia.

Then, the minute DVDFab tried to open the disc, just crashed/reported some unknown error. It was working without this disc inserted.

Later, I tried to use the last DVDFab version, 5.2.2.2.

As you can see here on the changelog:
http://dvdfab.com/dvd-fab-new.htm

Some fixes were made since my last version.

Nothing changed. DVDFab is still crashing with this DVD.

Then I closed DVDFab, and tried AnyDVD (last version - 6.4.9.2).

AnyDVD and the DVD Shrink (from 2005) were able to decrypt the disc, using their default settings (I didn't changed anything on both of them).

But a few changes happened, when comparing with the original "Street Fighter" DVD.

1) The original DVD had one animation with the Columbia logo (http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/7861/pdvd001ki4.jpg) right from the start. After that, you are presented with the english menu/options (that's right, the menu was not translated, something not unusual at this time).

2) The decrypted files (with help from AnyDVD/DVD Shrink (which last version was from 2005) are different.

* No Columbia logo/animation. One japanese video with some text written (http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/1520/snapshot20081226233646wm1.jpg).

* Next to that, you will only see the japanese menu/options.

2) The original DVD when played with AnyDVD's help, was letting you switch the audio/subtitle tracks in the middle of the movie. The decrypted files (on my HDD) were not letting you do that.

*************
I tried to change AnyDVD's default region but nothing changed.

Then, while AnyDVD was open, I did a copy-paste on the VIDEO_TS directory from the original DVD. Just like that - a single copy-paste!

After 15 minutes, I tested the files.

They were exactly like the original DVD. Columbia logo/animation, switch between audio/subtitle tracks in the middle of the movie...

Now how strange is that? :D

I can't believe one old DVD released in 2002 can beat DVDFab which was updated this week. And the minute I inserted another random title, DVDFab was working fine.

Perhaps it was necessary to let this disc with some things locked?

For the record, this is the info received from AnyDVD after analysing the original Street Fighter disc:

Summary for drive D: (AnyDVD 6.4.9.2)
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4167B DL10 04072205B05081FE45
Drive (Hardware) Region: 4

Media is a DVD.
Booktype: dvd-rom (version 1), Layers: 1
Total size: 2173760 sectors (4245 MBytes)

Video DVD (or CD) label: DVD_VIDEO
Media is CSS protected!
Video Standard: NTSC
Media is locked to region(s): 2 3 4!

Found & removed RCE protection!
Structural copy protection not found.
Autorun not found on Video DVD.
Bad sector protection not found.
Emulating RPC-2 drive with region 4!And before you ask me, I tried to change the "default region" from AnyDVD to R1, R2 and R4. Didn't solved my problem.

I never tried to do a copy-paste on any original DVD before. I always thought this was never going to work.

Note: The R1 edition it's completely different than mine, it has more features and does not have any portuguese audio/subtitles like mine. But since the menus are presented on english and around 2002 many brazilian editions were manufactured in the US... perhaps the R1 edition can have the same RCE/bizarre protection? The back cover only states "Region 4", but that's not the whole history as you can see.

EDIT: Another unusual scenario. Now the original DVD is on the drive. AnyDVD is open. PowerDVD 8 is playing fine. Media Player Classic is showing the japanese-video-text and crashing...

You're having far too many (inconsistent) problems with a DVD that contains no special or newer copy protection. I'd suggest that either the DVD or your player/burner needs cleaning...

You're having far too many (inconsistent) problems with a DVD that contains no special or newer copy protection. I'd suggest that either the DVD or your player/burner needs cleaning... Believe me, the disc was only used a couple of times and both him and the drive are working fine. Today I am testing another 5 different titles, and countless more were decrypted without any problems.

I guess I am new to this whole RCE thing, because I don't have any idea how messed these discs are to all softwares involved.

But since I was able to copy the original DVD and burn into a new media (backup for security purposes), you can say the problem is solved. However, it was one unusual way to solve one unusual problem. Imagine if something like that happens and you are not informed at first, and needs to get rid of the original disc?

Imagine if something like that happens and you are not informed at first, and needs to get rid of the original disc? Why would you need to get rid of it?

Why would you need to get rid of it?Maybe you are selling? Giving the original to a friend for a brief period of time and afraid of losing?

I am really concerned that someday I might start losing things from my collection (despite the fact that burned discs in theory will not last longer). This is the 1st reason to decrypt the files and burn into another media, just for keep them safe. The other one might be not bother to insert the discs every single time and play all of them directly from my HDDs.

From what you've described regarding the menu, logo, audio etc., it may also be that you (perhaps unwittingly) purchased a poorly made bootleg version...

From what you've described regarding the menu, logo, audio etc., it may also be that you (perhaps unwittingly) purchased a poorly made bootleg version... The disc is original. It was purchased directly from a virtual (and recognized) store.

One other possibility that I might think of can be related to the default languages to menus/audio/subtitles configured on Media Player Classic. But selecting things on the "navigate" menu, it should be available (on Title Menu) the choice to switch between english and japanese menus... unless I am mistaken.

Since MPC was configured to "default", then it should be showing the english (not japanese) menus. And AnyDVD/DVD Shrink decrypting the DVD and not removing the locked things (in the middle of the movie, not being able to switch audio/subtitle tracks) is also strange.

Here's another very strong possibility. The AnyDVD report (see my post above) shows this is a CSS protected disc.

Take a look into this discussion:

How many DVDs out there are CSS protected?

How many DVDs out there are CSS protected?Virtually ALL commercial DVDs, with minor exception...

MPC's DVD navigation code isn't exactly perfect - not surprising considering you cannot get the specs without coughing up a lot of money and signing an NDA. I own a couple hundred DVDs and play them mostly with MPC and there's plenty that have navigational hiccups whereas they play just fine on a standalone (never bothered with PowerDVD when MPC was able to play DVDs with navigation) - so if you have PowerDVD or another licensed DVD player playing the discs properly, I'd look for the error in MPC.

Also, if you're selling your discs, you must destroy your backups or give them to the person you're selling the original to. And if you loan the original discs to your unreliable friends or colleagues when you have a backup ready, I think you're kinda missing the point of the backup.. backups are meant for everyday use and you keep the original safely locked away so that in case the backup breaks, you take out the original and create a new backup. Legally speaking, if it's not software (where you have an explicit right to a backup in many cases), if you loan the original and it gets lost / breaks, then you have to destroy your backup and buy another disc.. so you really want to keep those originals safe.
And.. if you store backups on a HD (I've created backups of all my DVDs and put them on a NAS) you really should bother checking them (at least on a cursory check basis) so that you won't have to dig through your attic if you find out that the backup didn't work out a couple years down the road.

A few quick notes:

As has been stated majority of commercial discs are CSS protected but not all. A few of the smaller studios put out many disc releases and use zero protections. At most they may have region coding and in many cases the disc is playable in 5 or more regions.
RCE protection has always performed the same function. Within the last year the implimentation for removal had to be updated in a few products. The old standard code for removing RCE removal didn't work any longer. Blue State was the first disc where I witnessed this problem. AnyDVD and DVDFab have both updated their RCE protection removal processes as far as I am aware.
As Doom9 stated DVD navigation is not 100% in MPC.

Preferred software players would be Showtime, VLC or PowerDVD. I find MPC has some problems, too.

I heard MPC had some problems with the navigational playback. VLC is flawless, as in the buttons click when you hover the mouse over them. With MPC you have to dance around a bit.

If I remember correctly you can change the decoder in MPC, maybe the proper DVD navigational decoder can be used? Time for a google search...

I just found out another necessary step to decrypt some DVDs.

Perhaps that was the Street Fighter case, I don't know. What I know is that following those steps worked for me (not with Street Fighter in particular, I am not sure if that was the case). I didn't tried in that period, since my copy-paste while AnyDVD was running that disc worked somehow.

I only noticed one DVD so far with this kind of issue (Harry & Sally/1989, R4/BR edition). If you don't follow that step, you won't be able to decrypt the original disc without the warning "This Player Is Incompatible With Region Marking Of This Disk".

Maybe SF was telling me the same thing, but written in some asian language? :D

Read the required steps here (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/758910). But only follow them if you are having this kind of issue, otherwise I believe a software like DVDFab is all you will need to decrypt all commercial DVDs out there.

Beyond that, I reported another issues related to DVD navigation, please click here (http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=1274988&postcount=7274) to read my post.

Are you using the CSS version or the NON-CSS version of DVDFab?

SLOVEHEART, I fail to see what your post have to do with this thread... :D

Are you using the CSS version or the NON-CSS version of DVDFab?What do you mean? There are two versions? How do I know which one I am using?

Yes there are two versions.
You want to download from dvdfab.com and not from dvdfab.net.

This subject has been discussed in the AnyDVD boards and it seems I was configuring both AnyDVD/DVDFab in the wrong way, regarding the region-code (also read the part where I told my LG drive was using factory settings, no region set):
http://forum.slysoft.com/showthread.php?t=30062

Once I get my hands on the quoted discs (Harry/SF) again, I will test if something changes. So perhaps the navigation issues experienced by some players were a result of those wrong settings, and perhaps the "region marking" error from the "When Harry Met Sally" disc was solved with those steps... perhaps PGCEdit wasn't necessary at first, after all.
