Very strange artifacts occuring sporadically

Hi All,

I'm now playing around encoding SVCD from DivX for 2 months or so. I found settings that are satifying to fit a movie on 2 80min CDs. But some strange artifacts occuring sproadically if I encode with CCE (i'd use tmpegenc if it would support linary quantization). The artifacts are occuring for about 0,25 to 0,5 sec somewhere in the image (no pattern where and when though). Most often this are ugly green or white macroblocks spreading over the image and also flickering occurs sometimes with white zigzag lines over the whole screen (rarely), I don't have them with tmpegenc (but I get better results using linear quant scale that tmpegenc does not suppeot). I tried everything, different matrices, alternate scan, interlaced/progressive in almost every combination that makes sense.

I cant get rid of these artifacts.

Here are my settings:

Frameserving/resizing video with Vdub

CCE:
DC: auto
Quant: linear
Scan: ZigZag
Frame: progressive
DAR: 4:3

4pass VBR
1st pass: Q60,min 900, max 2100
rest passes: min 900, avg 1900, max 2496
Matrices: TMPEG2 standard (= cce 2.62standard)

Audi encoded by besweet
Muxing with bbmepg (using matrices generated by patcher)
Authoring with Vcdimager, burn with cdrwin.

_Please_ help, I can eliminate the artifacts.

I have the latest program versions (except cce 2.50). Player Pioneer DV444.

i got those too!!!!

when encoding the new star Trek TNG season 2 with DVD2SVCD

often this errors also include a short audio "blip"

i also don´t know how to get rid of these, as i encoded the complete season 1 and there were no errors at all.

maybe the telecide routine is buggy? because the only thing i changed from the encode setting is smart deinterlace -->telecide

Since i'm also from the lucky guys that have Pioneer 444, and i also have that problem (more like green blocks and freezes):

The problem is with the DVD player. Why: simply because the problems don't appear in the same area when you play the SVCD many times. I mean the problem doesn't always appear in the same spot.

What i have done: Try to put a limit to the max bitrate. For me 2000 works ok, since CCE doesn't respect it i get around 2300 max. This seems to keep the DVD player happy. You may also try to check the avg bitrate to something like 1200 or 1400.

I have a Pioneer 434, which I guess is just an older version of the 444, and have no problems with it even with CCE's settings at 2500 max video + 160 audio. I have seen green blobs and weird flashes before when the data is corrupt...

If you see it when just viewing the mpg file (prior to burning), something may be corrupting the data - your source, a bad memory (rare, but I actually had this problem), or bad HD/controller, etc.

If you see it after burning, try burning at a slower rate. I guess this depends on the drive and media, but even at 8x I occationally see an error when I scan it through Nero's ScanDisc tool. So now I burn all my SVCDs at 4x.

R U guys using subtitles?

I've found certain videos, on certain players, with subtitles will give errors like that if (a) subs are turned off; or (b) youve set subs to an "empty" channel (like the trick of telling DVD2SVCD to put the english subs on stream 2 and leave stream 1 empty).

In those cases (at least on my player) the glitchy artificats aren't there when the subs are turned "on".

Weird, eh.

I think its a problem with submux.
