What H.264 Encoder do Studio use?

I am thinking they all use MainConept or other encoder. The problem i have is that the H.264 quality from Digital Broadcaster are very poor compare to even Self Encode.

I cant understand why they do not use X264 ? Is there some legal problem with using it commercially?

Digital broadcast encoding uses realtime hardware encoders--examples include Ateme, Scientific Atlanta, etc.

x264 isn't well-suited for that kind of environment because it isn't a "plug and play" solution like the boxes sold by hardware encoder companies: it isn't built to handle every last possible constraint they could possibly need without potentially some modifications--and most broadcasters don't hire encoder developers. For most broadcasters it's already a big deal to upgrade to H.264 (most are still on MPEG-2!)--actually choosing a good H.264 encoder is a step beyond.

Avail Media is an example of a company that does use x264 exclusively for IPTV and cable broadcast.

Sony Encoder BAEVX1000 (aka BluCode)
NexCode encoder (aka TigerAVC, aka Thomson Encoder): stopped
......
And two realtime hardware card encoder.

I wont agree there.. We evaluated all these modern encoders at work for a 120++ HD/SD h.264 purchase and went for Motorola's new 1u Series..
I think there are many oppinions about the term "reference" ;)

Yes may be, because I talked only about encoders saw at last NAB.
I can say only that many (all much with my feedback) HDTV broadcaster use Harmonic encoder.
And the "power" of Harmonic encoder are the video preprocess filter ( like PeP/CinePSE ).

Can you give me a link about this Motoral encoder?
And if you have some stream from this encoder?
It use FPGA or H264 encoder chipset ?
