How do I set Default System Renderer manually?

Hi,

though working with Windows for quite some time, here' a problem I could'nt fix:

I use Win 2000. For DVD playback, I have Nero Showtime, PowerDVD, Media Player Classic, DVD Shrink 3.2 and the built-in Windows DVD Player, which is the only one to work correctly but doesn't offer much comfort. As for the other ones, the picture is much too dark and consists mostly of red colors; I surmise all of these players make, for some unknown (to me) reason use of a wrong renderer which is registered as system default, though. When using DVD Shrink, it offers the following "Direct X video renderers": System Default Renderer" - bad picture as described above. "VMR-9": excellent - apparently the correct codec. "VMR-7": bad - picture just as with System Default renderer. "Overlay mixer": quite o.k. "Built-in Software Renderer": coarse picture, but colors o.k.

Installing other software players to get a suitable renderer didn't fix the problem - not the installation of Cyberlink nor Media Player Classic - the problem remained. It seems I will have to set the correct renderer manually - but how ( using regsvr, perhaps). Anybody out there who can help? Any hint is welcome!

Ummm... in MPC (or MPC HomeCinema (http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/)) you can choose the renderer that's used under "View > Options > Playback > Output > DirectShow Video".

The default renderer that's used systemwide can't really be changed, it's determined by your OS - I'd assume that under W2K it's either the overlay mixer or VMR7.

Anyway - there should be color settings in your graphic driver control panel for videos; the contrast, brightness, saturation etc. settings are probably set to whack values which would explain why videos looking ugly with most renderers.
