I have a Hi-def TV which does not have an HDMI input and is not HDCP compatible. Will an upconverting DVD player be effective with this setup, or is it dependent on the DVD player. One alternative I am exploring is to connect my computer by DVI cable to the TV and play content that way. I hope this is not a rehash of previous questions, but any input is appreciated.

Hi!

Does the TV have component input or only composite input?

It has component, composite, dvi, RGB/svga, S-video.

Thanks for the reply

You should be able to use the component connection to upconvert to as much as 1080i...

What about using an HDMI -> DVI adapter?

The TV doesn't support HDCP, but is HDCP required to play normal DVD discs? I thought only HD discs (HD-DVD and Blu-Ray) have that rude restriction...

Thanks for the replies, Yes I was hoping that dvd upconversion was not effected by HDCP. But a couple of years ago I thought I was getting a Hi-def TV, until they came up with HDCP.

Thanks

@spuddog

can it or can it not?
before being disappointed check that the standalone will upconvert thru the component I/O. Most standalones will only upconvert thru the HDMI I/O. Read the manual for the standalone to find out.
I know that Helios will upconvert thru component, that was why I got it, so that I could split to 2 tv's during prewire. Don't evan know if they make an hdmi splitter.

Yes it is a hi-def TV. What I meant was that when they settled on HDMI and HDCP it locked all of the people who had earlier bought TV's without Hdmi inputs from playing commercial produced hi-def content.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions, I will consider them and decide which direction to go.
