I have a moderate DVD collection here that I used to convert to DivX utilizing TMPGEnc and the DivX plugin. Details aside, I've recently lost about 600GB worth of locally encoded DivX files due to a hard drive crash. (And I've since decided to make two copies of everything on seperate drives since this happened too so I don't have to go through this again. :D).
At any rate, I've been looking at updating my methods a bit. One of the main reasons I stuck with DivX was for the ability to play these files on a DivX compatible SAP, which worked out great. However, since playing around with MeGUI and h264, it's amazing to see the quality difference between the two formats, in favour of h264.
I think I've only hit one snag tho, and this is where I am seeking advice.
The vast majority of my DVD's are interlaced. When utilizing TMPGEnc, the resulting frame rate of the output DivX files matched the 29.97 FPS of the original. TMPGEnc hid a few things from the user, so I really have no idea where the deinterlacing was taking place (be it in TMPGEnc itself, or after the frames were passed to the DivX plugin), and exactly how and what filters were being utilized.
With MeGUI, after deinterlacing with TIVTC (as suggested by MeGUI's analyze function), and applying the x264: DXVA-SD-Anime_Toons HQ settings, the resulting frame rate is 23.97. The quality of this result is spectacular tho. Virtually all of my DVD's are interlaced and Anime.
I suppose my main concern and question is if there will be any types of problems with video encoded with this frame rate in the future? Is this result "standard" enough to ensure playability on set top boxes like Popcorn Hour or the Western Digital TV unit?
I'm really just attempting to future proof myself as best as possible as encoding 150+ DVD's is a rather daunting and time consuming task.
Thank you all very much for your time and assistance!
